Senator Flanagan Pleased That Kings Park Cleanup Funding Included In Governor’s Budget

Senator John J. Flanagan (2nd Senate District) announced that the $25 million he secured last year for the environmental cleanup of the former Kings Park Psychiatric Center has been reappropriated in Governor Eliot Spitzer's proposed budget, which was presented on January 31st. This money, which is an unprecedented appropriation for environmental cleanup, will be utilized by the state to help remediate the property that is now part of the Nissequogue River State Park. Senator Flanagan had sought this funding in a recent letter to Governor Spitzer. The funding will greatly ease the burden on the state parks department as they move forward.

Senator Flanagan Joins Students and Taxpayers to Rally for Long Island

Senator John Flanagan (2nd Senate District), along with members from both parties in the New  York State Senate and Assembly, joined with over 1,200 taxpayers and students from across Long Island to fight for Long Island’s fair share of education funding.  The protest was held a day after Governor David Paterson utilized federal stimulus funding to partially fill the over $185 million hole he created in his original budget.

Senator Flanagan Named to Key Education Role

Senator John Flanagan (2nd Senate District), who has long been regarded as an expert on the state budget and a fighter for Long Island education, was recently selected to serve as the Ranking Republican Member of the Senate Standing Committee on Education.

The selection, which was announced by Senate Republican Leader Dean Skelos, will expand Senator Flanagan’s ability to fight for Long Island’s fair share of education aid.  In his new role, Senator Flanagan will lead the Republican members of the committee and work to protect Long Island children and taxpayers.

Senator Flanagan and Island Harvest Join Together in Fight Against Hunger

Senator John J. Flanagan (2nd Senate District) and Island Harvest President and Chief Executive Randi   Shubin Dresner joined together to unveil the organization’s newest tool in their fight against hunger – a new 53’ refrigerated trailer.  The new trailer, which was fully funded through an $80,000 grant Senator Flanagan secured, will allow Island Harvest to transport perishable foods and to broaden its efforts to help those in need.

Senator Flanagan Helps Residents Prepare For Emergencies

To inform residents about how to prepare in the event of an emergency, Senator John Flanagan (2nd Senate District) recently hosted a community seminar which provided helpful tips and information to local residents. The event, which was held at the Middle Country Public Library in Centereach, was presented with the help of a number of emergency assistance organizations. The meeting provided those who attended with numerous safety tips on how to prepare for and recover from an emergency.

Continuing his series of Emergency Preparedness seminars, Senator John J. Flanagan (2nd Senate District) will be hosting a meeting in Smithtown to help local residents prepare for any sort of emergency situation. The meeting will be open to all and will be free of charge.Representatives of the New York State Emergency Management Office, the Suffolk County Office of Emergency Management, the American Red Cross and the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) will be on hand to provide residents with expert advice about how to prepare for and deal with an emergency situation.

Senator Flanagan Moves To Protect Expansion Of Nissequogue River State Park

Senator John Flanagan (2nd Senate District) today announced that he has sponsored legislation that would formally require New York State to recognize the 2006 expansion of the Nissequogue River State Park.

That expansion, which Senator Flanagan achieved through a cooperative effort with the Pataki administration and former New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation (NYSOPRHP) Commissioner Bernadette Castro, added 365 acres of public parkland to the New York State parks system.
