When Dennis John Wickes, Jr. saw his friend struggling off the Kings Park Bluff, he selflessly jumped into the dangerous waters to save a life. For those actions, the Centereach 11th grader was presented with the New York State Senate Liberty Medal by Senator John J. Flanagan (2nd Senate District). The honor was presented to Dennis in front of the entire 11th Grade class at a special assembly at the Centereach High School.In July, Dennis was relaxing with two friends at the Kings Park Bluff when one of the boys decided to go swimming.

Beginning on November 1st, a new law sponsored by Senator John Flanagan (2nd Senate District) will enable New York State consumers to block access to their credit report. The new law, which was signed into law in June, will strengthen the available identity theft protections enjoyed by New Yorkers and severely limit the ability of identity thieves to open fraudulent accounts in the name of innocent consumers.If a credit card company or bank cannot view an applicant’s credit history, they are unlikely to issue that person any new credit cards, loans, etc.

Senator John Flanagan (2nd Senate District) has introduced legislation that would greatly enhance the rights of cell phone consumers. Senator Flanagan sponsored the "Wireless Telephone Service Consumer Protection Act" to help provide safeguards for New York State residents who sign up with a cell phone provider.The main component of the act is the introduction of a trial period for customer evaluation of cell phone service. This evaluation period, which is to last no less than 15 days, would allow a cell phone consumer to test their new service provider.

Flanagan (2nd Senate District) proudly joined the staff and administration of the Stony Brook University Medical Center as they announced the establishment of the Brady William Russell Memorial Fund. Senator Flanagan secured startup funding for the project that will enable research into neonatal complications from high-risk pregnancies, premature birth and Sudden Infant Death (SIDS).The fund is named in honor of Brady William Russell, the son of Sean and Mary Ellen Russell, who passed away earlier this year.

Senator John Flanagan (2nd Senate District) renewed his call to close a dangerous loophole in New York State law to protect the children of our community. The change, which Senator Flanagan voted for in June, would allow police to charge those who send sexually explicit e-mail to minors with a felony regardless of the actually substance of the messages.This change is necessary since the courts have used a loophole in the law to rule that e-mail that contains explicit text but lacks photos or images is not covered under current law.
