Senator Flanagan Reminds Homeowners To Apply For STAR Program

Senator John Flanagan (2nd Senate District) is urging all homeowners to apply for the School Tax Relief (STAR) program prior to the upcoming March 1st deadline if they have not done so already.  This program provides New York homeowners with partial exemptions from school property taxes that are taken directly off taxpayers property tax bills.

Homeowners who have not yet signed up for the STAR program can apply with their town assessor’s office.

State of Politics Blog - Superintendent Salary Cap Support Grows

Sen. John Flanagan told me during a CapTon interview last night that he’s open to the idea of a salary cap for public school superintendents, whose compensation was targeted by Gov. Andrew Cuomo during his budget address last week.

Cuomo mentioned the salary of a Syosset schools superintendent, Carole Hankin, who earns $386,868 a year, as an example of where education officials might consider cutting to make up for the loss of state aid they are expected to suffer during this budget cycle.

Senator Flanagan Working To Provide Tools For Early Detection Of Breast Cancer

Senator John J. Flanagan (2nd Senate District) announced that he has authored legislation that would provide stronger preventative health care for women.  The legislation would require insurance companies to cover the cost of supplemental screening for women who have dense breast tissue or who are at greater risk of being diagnosed with breast cancer.

Senator Flanagan Sponsors Property Tax Cap

Senator John Flanagan (2nd Senate District) announced today that legislation he sponsored in the New York State Senate to cap property tax growth has been successfully passed.  The legislation, which is now in the hands of the Assembly, would cap the growth of school and local taxes at two percent or the Consumer Price Index (CPI), whichever is less. 

In addition, the Republican-led Senate approved two measures related to providing mandate relief to school districts and local governments.

Senator Flanagan: Arizona Shooter Shows Need To Ban Salvia In New York State

Senator John Flanagan (2nd Senate District) is again calling for the Assembly to join him in his effort to impose a statewide ban on the sale of salvia divinorum, which is widely claimed to have the same effects of LSD (lysergic acid diethylamide), throughout New York State.  His renewed call to ban the legally available hallucinogen follows the news that Jared Loughner, the alleged shooter in Arizona earlier this month, had been a regular user of the hallucinogenic substance.

Senator Flanagan and Senate Majority Act On Job Creation and Taxpayer Protection Act

Senator John Flanagan (2nd Senate District) today supported the Job Creation and Taxpayer Protection Act of 2011, a three-part plan to encourage the creation of new private sector jobs and ensure fiscal responsibility.  This plan, which is now being sent to the Assembly for further action, includes a jobs incentive program, a two percent state spending cap and a new requirement that calls for a two-thirds “super majority” vote to increase taxes in New York State.

Senator John Flanagan (2nd Senate District), who has been a leader in the fight to secure Long Island’s fair share of state education aid, has been selected as the Chairman of the Senate Standing Committee on Education.

The selection, which was announced by Senate Republican Leader Dean Skelos, will help Senator Flanagan expand his role in the fight to protect the educational system of both Long Island and the entire State of New York.  In this new position, Senator Flanagan will have a clearer and more effective voice in shaping the educational goals of our state and the future of the state’s children.

Senator Flanagan Renews Call For Ban Of Hallucinogenic Drug Following Miley Cyrus Video

Following media reports that pop star Miley Cyrus was caught on video allegedly using salvia divinorum, Senator John Flanagan (2nd Senate District) today called for the Assembly to join him in his effort to ban the sale of this legal hallucinogen throughout New York State.  Senator Flanagan has been pushing for a ban of the hallucinogen, which is widely claimed to have the same effects of lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD), for years and has been successful in gaining passage of the ban in the Senate.

Salvia divinorum, also known as Diviner’s Sage, Sister Salvia, Ska Maria Pastora or simply salvia, is a psychoactive plant from the mint family and is currently available on the Internet and in stores without age restrictions.

Senator Flanagan Visits Kings Park Students

Senator John Flanagan (2nd Senate District) recently visited Kings Park High School to discuss the New York State Senate with students of the AP Government class.

Senator Flanagan spoke to the students, who are taking part in the class under the direction of teacher Jack Bishop, about his role in the legislative process, his efforts to protect the residents of the 2nd Senate District and other topics that provided the students with an overview of how New York State government operates.  The students were then provided with an opportunity to ask Senator Flanagan questions about the state issues that are important to them.
