Senator Serrano wrote a letter to the United States Postal Service (USPS) urging them to keep the Tito Puente Post Office branch open at its current location in East Harlem. The USPS has proposed the downsizing and relocation of this branch. This branch is the only Post Office located in the upper section of East Harlem, and it's relocation would burden countless residents who will not be able to utilize their services. (New York, NY) - Senator José M. Serrano joined New Yorkers Against Fracking, Food & Water Watch, elected officials, and other environmental advocates at a press conference on the steps of City Hall to highlight the numerous dangers associated with hydrofracking, a highly environmentally hazardous natural gas drilling method being considered for implementation in New York State. As of February 2013, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) has delayed the issuing of the final Supplemental Generic Environmental Impact Statement (SGEIS) on high-volume hydrofracking in New York until the Department of Health (DOH) completes public review of the health impacts associated with hydrofracking.

Senator Serrano Hits the Streets with Council Member Jessica Lappin To Raise Awareness to Sexual Assault

(East Harlem, NY) - Senator Serrano joined Council Member Jessica Lappin on the streets of East Harlem to raise awareness to the alarming rise in sexual assault crimes in Upper Manhattan. With NYPD crime statistics reporting a 35 percent increase in misdemeanor sex crimes in Northern Manhattan as of March 31, 2013, and 13 sexual assault complaints in East Harlem alone in 2013, Senator Serrano alongside Council Member Jessica Lappin handed out flyers with information of resources for victims of abuse.

Senator Serrano Joins Other Elected Officials in Fight For Resident Input & Transparency in NYCHA Infill Process

(New York, NY)- Senator José M. Serrano joined City Council Members Rosie Mendez, Margaret Chin and Melissa Mark-Viverito in a press conference on the steps of City Hall to demand that the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) improve the Infill Development process to include residents. The infill development plan is a current proposal by NYCHA to lease land on open spaces within NYCHA developments to developers, who would then build private housing developments on the sites. NYCHA claims that this will allow them to raise revenue for long overdue repairs and maintenance within public housing. Senator Serrano maintains that NYCHA residents should be involved in the process.

Senator Serrano Serves as Moderator for Attorney General Schneiderman's Language Access Workshop at the SOMOS El Futuro Conference

(Albany, NY) – Senator José M. Serrano served as moderator for a workshop at the SOMOS El Futuro Conference, sponsored by Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman. The event was designed to inform attendees about their rights regarding language access. With New York commonly known as a cultural melting pot, the workshop addressed efforts made by the Attorney General's Office to ensure equal access for minority language New Yorkers in election ballots, Police services, Sheriff's Offices, and written materials provided by pharmacies and schools.

Senator Serrano Weighs in on Gun Control at NYU Panel

(New York, NY) – Senator José M. Serrano served as a panelist for an important discussion at NYU entitled: “Triggering the Debate: Race, Gun Control, and Mental Illness.” The panel addressed the national debate regarding gun laws and considered the complicated history that race and mental illness has historically played in the debate. “Recent acts of gun violence are alarming. My colleagues and I must do everything possible to pass legislation that will protect the people of New York," said Senator Serrano. “As an elected official, it is also very important to me that we urge our legislators on a national level for tougher measures that will ensure that guns do not end up in the wrong hands,” concluded Serrano.

Senator Serrano Drafts Letter Urging U.S. Senators to Place Tighter Restrictions on Gun Sales

"Each year, countless individuals are victims of senseless and avoidable gun violence. My colleagues and I in the Senate Democratic Conference have continuously pushed for tougher measures on a state level that will ensure that our gun violence is curbed. However, more must be done on a national level. Today I sent a letter urging United States Senators to increase gun control measures by requiring background checks and record-keeping on all U.S. gun sales. As legislators, we must do all that we can to ensure that our constituents, the people of New York and the people of this Nation, are kept safe."

Senator Serrano Sponsors Resolution Honoring the Life of Rev. Wenzell Jackson

(Albany, NY)-A Senate Resolution sponsored by State Senator José M. Serrano honoring the life and accomplishments of long-time clergy leader and Chairman of Bronx Community Board 4, Reverend Wenzell P. Jackson, passed the New York State Senate unanimously. The Resolution is also sponsored by Assemblywoman Vanessa Gibson in the New York State Assembly.
