Serrano Welcomes Displaced Bronx Residents Home

Today Senator José M. Serrano, along with Community advocates and residents of the Highbridge section in the Bronx, welcomed back 26 displaced families that had been evacuated by city agencies from 1204 Shakespeare Avenue due to safety concerns.On Saturday, December 4th, city officials evacuated tenants after they found construction debris blocking a fire exit and two fire escapes were deemed unsafe for use. Families traveled to shelters and hotels around New York City, some as distant as Far Rockway, making it difficult for children to attend local schools, among other inconveniences.

Statement from Sen. José M. Serrano Re: Hydraulic Fracturing

“Recently I was proud to support legislation that mandated a moratorium on hydraulic fracturing, a practice that can prove dangerous to the health of many New Yorkers by contaminating our drinking water and taking its toll on our farmland, among other health and environmental concerns."It is disappointing that the Governor vetoed this bill, which would have suspended the issuance of all new oil and gas drilling permits, including both vertical and horizontal hydro-fracturing.

Statement from Senator José M. Serrano Re: World AIDS Day

"Each year, World AIDS Day recognizes the progress that has been made over the years, commemorates those we have lost, and reminds us that there is still a great deal of work to be done in the battle against this devastating illness.“One in five of an estimated 1.1 million Americans living with HIV do not know they have contracted the virus.  In New York’s communities of color, the statistics are particularly sobering. According to the Department of Health, from 2008 to 2009 more than 37,000 people lived with HIV, while over 60,000 people were diagnosed with AIDS. In both cases, about 45 percent of those affected were African American and 31 percent were Hispanic.

Roosevelt Island Tram Re-Opens

Senator Serrano today joined community leaders for the Inaugural Ride on The Roosevelt Island Aerial Tramway, the most advanced urban aerial tramway system in the world. Closed for modernization in March 2010, the system has been completely rebuilt and is now back in full service.

Serrano Sponsors Intellectual Property Workshop

Over 40 people attended the first half of a two part intellectual property workshop on Tuesday, November 30th, at Hostos Community College. The event, titled “You Made It Now Protect It: Trademarks and Copyright for Artists, Nonprofit Organizations and Small Businesses,” provided a great deal of useful information regarding trademarks, copyrights, design patents, and work-for-hire agreements. An expert panel of intellectual property attorneys explained these concepts and how they can be put into practice.Senator Serrano sponsored the workshop along with the Bronx Council on the Arts and The Legal Aid Society.

Perkins “Parks Champion” award from Parks and Trails New York, for his continued advocacy on behalf of New York’s State Parks. I am honored to receive this prestigious award. Financially, this has been a tough year for parks, and thanks to the hard work of parks advocates such as Parks and Trails New York, elected officials, and most importantly an energized and vocal public, we were able to save our parks for the summer season. This summer saw some of the largest increases in state park usage, reinforcing the fact that parks play an important role in the lives of all New Yorkers.

Serrano Discusses Naturally Occurring Cultural Districts

Senator José M. Serrano participated in a roundtable discussion yesterday on how best to support New York City’s Naturally Occurring Cultural Districts. The roundtable was sponsored by the Fourth Arts Block, the leadership organization for Manhattan’s East 4th Street Cultural District.The event featured a diverse group of New York City’s creative practitioners, policymakers, funders and scholars to discuss the challenges facing cultural districts that have emerged throughout the city over the last several years. These naturally occurring cultural districts are brought to life by local artists, grassroots community groups, and local “creative” businesses, and can be found throughout New York City.

East Harlem Asthma Center of Excellence Opens Its Doors

Senator José M. Serrano joined Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg and Borough President Scott M. Stringer today to announce the opening of the East Harlem Asthma Center of Excellence walk-in facility.  With over 25% of the area’s children suffering from the condition, East Harlem has the highest rate of childhood asthma hospitalizations in New York City. The new center, which is part of the City’s PlaNYC initiative, aims to reduce these hospitalizations by 50 percent over the next five years.
