Hope Community Community Service Awards

Senator Serrano attended Hope Community, Inc.'s 42nd Annual Community Service Awards Gala today, and presented an honorary award to Assemblyman Robert J. Rodriguez.  Rodriguez was elected to the New York State Assembly in 2010 and serves the 68th Assembly District. "It's an honor to have the opportunity to present this award to Assemblyman Robert Rodriguez for his distinctive work in the East Harlem community. Having been born and raised in East Harlem, Robert has a keen understanding of the main issues affecting this community. He has demonstrated to not only be a great leader, but a great partner in tackling many of the most important struggles of the community."

Bronx Chamber of Commerce Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month

The Bronx Chamber of Commerce hosted their Hispanic Heritage Month Leadership Luncheon and honored Senator Serrano with theLeadership Award for being an exemplary member of the Hispanic community. "I'm extremely honored to be presented with this award," said Senator Serrano. "Hispanics are a growing demographic in the United States and make up the 15th largest consumer economy in the world.

Serrano Celebrates Hispanic Heritage with Metropolitan Hospital

Senator Serrano celebrated Hispanic Heritage with Metropolitan Hospital.   The event featured health education and screenings, cultural exhibits, music, food and entertainment. “Health disparities remain extremely high for minority residents. Although our hospitals have been threatened with budget cuts, the administration and staff at Metropolitan Hospital continues to demonstrate  how essential their services are in to this community.”The theme of the event was "Keeping the Promise: Unity, Strength and Leadership, " and it was widely attended by local leaders, residents and community organizations.

Senator Serrano Celebrates Family Day with Lincoln Hospital

Senator Serrano attended the  Lincoln Medical and Mental Health Center Senior and Family Day in the Bronx. The event, which took place on Lincoln's Hospital's "Great Lawn", hosted free blood pressure and glucose screenings and the entertainment included giveaways, food and music."It’s great to see the community come together to celebrate healthy living, and to get informed about the various programs available,” said Senator Serrano. "For years, Lincoln Hospital has been an important institution in this community, and to see local families gather to celebrate its leadership is a testament to their great work.” The event was sponsored by the NYC Department for the Aging Metroplus and Healthfirst.

Rally to Save Ruppert Playground

Senator Serrano joined Yorkville residents for a rally at Ruppert Playground as part of a campaign to save the park from permanent closure.

Related Cos., has proposed building a 49 story building at the location, and is ready to begin preliminary work on the site. The park was closed on September 12th, and local elected officials are working to prevent any future construction and to once again make the park available for community use. Ruppert Park, which was opened in the 1970s, contains basketball, tennis and handball courts.

Street Renaming: Philip Reed Way

The East Harlem community honored Councilmember Philip Reed by naming the intersection of First Avenue and 111th Street “Philip Reed Way.”

Philip Reed was a member of the New York City Council from 1998 to 2005, where he represented District 8, which encompasses East Harlem, portions of the South Bronx, and Central Park. He was the first openly gay African American Council Member.

Serrano Honored for Leadership on Environmental Issues

The New York State Federation of the Hispanic Chambers of Commerce honored Senator Serrano with their Green Legislator’s  Award for being the most environmentally friendly member of the State Senate.   

According to the EPL/Environmental Advocates preliminary scorecard, which tracks legislators’ votes on bills affecting New York’s environment, Senator Serrano had a perfect score of 67 out of 67.

Serrano and other Roosevelt Island Elected Officials Rally to Save the Post Office

Senator Serrano Encourages City to Implement Arts Education Blueprint

(New York, NY)- Senator José M. Serrano (D-Manhattan/Bronx) today applauded the Panel for Education Policy's Arts Education Advisory Committee for developing a blueprint consisting of goals and recommendations to enhance arts education in New York City schools, and encouraged the City to carry out its implementation. 
 

In 2009 Senator Serrano sponsored legislation (S6106), which passed the Senate, to create an advisory committee to advise the Chancellor on arts education and to work to improve compliance with State arts education requirements. Despite the fact that the legislation did not pass the Assembly, in March, 2010, under the leadership of Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, the City's Arts Education Advisory Committee was created.

Bronx Dominican Parade

Today, Senator Serrano joined his father, Congressman Jose E. Serrano, for the Bronx Dominican Parade. The parade has become a yearly tradition in the Bronx and is a lively celebration of Dominican Heritage that makes its way down the Grand Concourse each year.“It is such a pleasure to be a part of this wonderful celebration,” said Senator Serrano. "There are now more Dominicans in the Bronx than in Washington Heights, and it is so delightful to march down the concourse with my Dominican constituents, and to see everyone come together to celebrate the rich and vibrant Dominican culture.”

Opening of the Pool at Roberto Clemente State Park

Today, Senator Serrano attended the re-opening of the Roberto Clemente State Park pool. The renovated facility includes an Olympic size pool, a sprinkler park for children, a wading pool, a diving tank, and a new indoor basketball court with locker rooms. “With the sky high temperatures that are sweeping the Northeast coast, the re-opening of the pool could not have come at a better time,” said Senator Serrano. “Fortunately, our residents now have a way to combat the heat by taking advantage of this much needed facility. I’m extremely proud to have supported such a fantastic project, which will provide access to recreation for countless families in the Bronx for years to come.”

Senator Serrano at Bronx Constituent Hours

Senator Serrano and his staff held their monthly Bronx Constituent Hours today at River Park Towers."While we do a tremendous amount of work out of our District Office in East Harlem, there is no substitute for direct interaction with my constituents here in the Bronx," said the Senator. The Serrano Constituent Services team holds roving hours in the Bronx each month, and on Roosevelt Island (RIOC Offices, 591 Main Street) on the first Tuesday of every month. No appointment is necessary.
