Senator Serrano Supports TWU Local 100!

Senator Serrano joined TWU Local 100 President John Samuelsen, TWU Local 100 transit workers, and elected officials for a press conference to discuss contract negotiations for 38,000 transit workers, between the Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) and TWU Local 100. TWU Local 100’s contract expired on Monday, January 23, and the MTA has been unable to negotiate a fair contract with TWU Local 100. “Every day New Yorkers rely on the New York City subway and bus transportation system to get to where they need to go,” said Senator Serrano. “It's unacceptable that 38,000 transit workers are currently working without any benefits, and I hope that the MTA and TWU Local 100 are able to promptly reach an agreement for a fair contract.”

Senator Serrano Attends the Unveiling of the New American Wing at The Metropolitan Museum of Art!

Senator Serrano today attended the unveiling of the New American Wing Galleries for Paintings, Sculptures, and Decorative Arts at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The opening of the New American Wing is in the final stage of a multiple stage project, and the new wing depicts colonial and early federal period arts, as well as nineteenth and early twentieth century showcases.

The 35th Annual Three Kings Day Parade!

Senator Serrano today celebrated Three Kings Day with El Museo del Barrio at their 35th annual Three Kings Day parade in the streets of East Harlem. The annual celebration brings together local school groups, families, community organizations, and elected officials from all over New York City.“It is always a pleasure to be a part of this wonderful tradition,” said Senator Serrano. “El Museo del Barrio does a terrific job at ensuring that the parade gets better and better each year. It is important that we continue to pass down this tradition and teach younger generations about our heritage and roots. The camels, live music, dancing, puppets, and parranda make this an enjoyable experience for everyone in the East Harlem community.”

Senator Serrano Applauds Governor's State of the State Address

New York, NY -- State Senator José M. Serrano (D-Manhattan/Bronx) expressed great optimism following today's State of the State address. In particular, he pointed to Governor Andrew Cuomo's proposal to bring much-needed repairs to 48 state parks and historic sites, and his focus on these as a tool for tourism and economic development."This Governor's proven track record in determining the needs of the state, and his ability to follow through with plans that deliver results has inspired great confidence in both the legislature and the public," said the Senator.In his address, the Governor stated that 83 percent of parks and historic sites are in need of repair, many of the damage having been caused by recent hurricanes Irene and Lee.

Average Life Expectancy in New York at a Record High!

(Bronx, NY)- Senator José M. Serrano joined Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg today for a press conference at Lincoln Medical and Mental Health Center in the Bronx to announce that New Yorkers are now living longer and are healthier. It was reported that New Yorkers born in 2009 could live to 80.6 years, a record high and increase of almost three years since 2000. The average New Yorker's life expectancy is also higher than the national average of 78.2 years.

Senator Serrano Reads from Handel’s Messiah at Lehman Center for the Performing Arts!

Senator Serrano participated in the  annual reading of George Handel’s Messiah at Lehman Center for the Performing Arts in the Bronx. Music was performed by The Orchestra of The Bronx with The Bronx Opera Chorus and Soloists.

“It’s always a pleasure to serve as a reader for Handel’s Messiah,” said Senator Serrano. “The Bronx is so rich in Arts and culture and the Bronx Opera shines a spotlight on all the talent this great borough has to offer. Handel's Messiah is such an uplifting musical work of art that showcases the transformative and inspirational affect that the art and culture bring to our community."

(Bronx, NY)-  On Thursday, December 1st, Senator José M. Serrano (D-Manhattan/Bronx), Assemblymember Vanessa Gibson (D-Bronx), and Councilmember Helen Diane Foster (D-Bronx) held an immigration forum in the Highbridge Community in the Bronx. The event featured a three part discussion on Secure Communities (S-Comm), Immigrant Rights, and Paths to Citizenship.
