Legislation to Establish Environmental Fund Passes Senate

Albany, NY- The New York State Senate today passed a bill (S7657), sponsored by José M. Serrano (D-Manhattan/Bronx), that establishes a New York City parks, trees, and urban forestry fund by means of a "check-off" on city income tax returns. This initiative will increase funding for the purposes of environmental conservation without making additional demands upon state funds.

Serrano Thrilled with Memorial Day Weekend Attendance at State Parks

"I am so thrilled and excited to learn of the major increase in park attendance that we are currently seeing. Now more than ever, we should recognize the significance that State Parks hold for the people of New York," stated Senator José M. Serrano after the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation announced that with 1.17 million visitors over Memorial Day weekend (May 29-31), attendance at State Parks soared by 245,296 visitors. This translates to a 17 percent increase from the 2009 holiday weekend.

Serrano and Englebright Urge Governor to Fund Parks

Today Senator José M. Serrano (D-Manhattan/Bronx) and Assemblymember Steve Englebright (D- Setauket) released a letter sent by them to Governor David A. Paterson urging him to adequately fund State Parks in the FY 2010-2011 Executive Budget to prevent park closures throughout the state. The lawmakers, who have been at the forefront of the issue of protecting State Parks and Historic Sites during the current budget season, expressed concern for not only the long-term fate of these public spaces, but for their well-being during the budget negotiation process.

Senator Serrano, Advocates, and U.S. Census Bureau Encourage All to Participate in the 2010 Census

Senator José M. Serrano (D-Manhattan/Bronx) today sponsored an event in conjunction with Councilmember Melissa Mark-Viverito (D-Manhattan/Bronx), Community Voices Heard, and the U.S. Census Bureau, that aimed to help achieve a complete and accurate count of the population in New York's 28th Senatorial District for the Census 2010.  "With only ten questions, the Census 2010 form is a simple five minute time investment that will help our communities obtain the benefits, services, and representation they deserve," said Senator Serrano. "It's important to note that Census information is never shared with immigration officials or any municipal, state, or federal agencies.

Senator Serrano Urges Leaders to Restore State Parks Funding

Governor David A. Patterson's proposed budget significantly slashes funding for New York State Parks. If the proposed budget is enacted, 40 parks will undergo service reductions, and 91 State Parks and Historic Sites will be forced to close.

Senator José M. Serrano, Chair of the Senate Committee on Cultural Affairs, Tourism, Parks and Recreation, has distributed the sign-on letter below- addressed to legislative leadership- to all members of the New York State Senate. He has garnered bipartisan support in favor of restoring funds for State Parks.

NY-SPAN Public Meeting: Senator Serrano Encourages You to Submit Testimony

The New York State Legislature Joint Advisory Board on the Broadcast of State Government Proceedings will conduct their second public meeting on December 10th. The Board was established to advise on the expansion of the current dedicated legislative television channel. The Advisory Board members have recommended that the television station be modeled after C-SPAN, and they would like your input on how this governmental affairs channel should operate.
