Senator Serrano Thanks his Constituents for Tremendous Show Of Support for The East Harlem Building Explosion Victims

(East Harlem, NY)- "As we continue to recover from last month's tragedy, I am extremely proud of  the way the community has continued to help each other during this time of need. Investigations are ongoing and I am looking into ways to ensure tragedies like this one will never happen again. 

"I would like to thank all of my constituents for the tremendous display of compassion that was exhibited by the amount of donations delivered to my district office for those affected by the East Harlem building collapse. "

"A special thanks to the parents and students from PS 87 in the Upper West Side, for their generous contributions of food, clothing, toiletries and other necessities made to those in dire need," concluded Serrano.

Experts in the field of health provided information regarding the alarming rate of chronic diseases that are disproportionately affecting the Latino community. Chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, obesity, hypertension, and many others have reached epidemic proportions among Latinos and other communities of color.

Senator José M. Serrano will moderate a panel discussion at the SOMOS el Futuro Conference weekend in Albany, entitled “Addressing Health Disparities in the Latino Community.” The topic of this workshop is a discussion with experts in the field of health regarding the alarming rate of chronic diseases that are disproportionately affecting the Latino community. Information and Resources for Victims of East Harlem Building Explosion and Collapse

(East Harlem, NY)- As the El Barrio community continues to recover from last week's horrific explosion and building collapse, it is important to keep in mind the growing number of people in need who were affected by this tragedy.

Along with my colleagues in government from East Harlem, my District Office, located at 157 E. 104th Street, will be accepting donations of clothing and canned goods for the victims and their families. In addition to my office, you can make donations to any of these locations listed below.  

The victims of this tragedy remain in our thoughts and prayers. I am confident that El Barrio as a community will continue to come together with the common purpose of  support, healing and rebuilding.

Senator Serrano Meets with Students from Manhattan Country School

(Albany, NY)- Senator Serrano met with 7th and 8th grade students from the Manhattan Country School, who traveled to Albany to discuss current education policies. The students spoke with the Senator about the School to Prison Pipeline, a term used to refer to the current trend of the criminalization of students in schools, which often leads to them ending up in the juvenile justice system. The students discussed ways to put an end to this disturbing pattern that disproportionally affects minority students.

Senator Serrano Sits Down with CUNY Representatives in Albany

(Albany, NY)- Senator Serrano met with Professional Staff Congress (PSC) representatives in Albany. The PSC represents over 25,000 members of faculty and staff from City University of New York (CUNY) and the CUNY Research Foundation. CUNY consists of 24 institutions of higher learning and is the third largest university system in the United States. PSC and Senator Serrano discussed the importance of CUNY to New York City, potential reforms to the NY TAP program and The DREAM Act.
