Health Disparities: The Need for Cultural and Linguistic Competence for Quality Health Care

The Education Fund of Family Planning Advocates Diverse Communities Health Initiative, Senator Serrano and Assemblyman Darryl C. Towns will present this workshop to raise awareness of the challenges that many communities face when it comes to accessing health care. Language barriers, financial obstacles, lack of insurance, immigration status, sexual orientation and cultural differences are among a host of factors that make access to care a daunting process.This workshop will emphasize the need for cultural competence trainings for health care providers; and participants will learn about the dynamics of cultural differences that hinder access to health care services during encounters with diverse populations.

Arts Forum: Connecting in the Arts

Senator Serrano, Senator Liz Krueger, and El Repertorio Espanol will co-sponsor a FREE EVENT that will explore innovative systems to maximize the connections between those working in the arts and their audiences.Branding, e-mail marketing, social networking and event planning have not traditionally been associated with the art world but technology has moved us all into a new age with the need for new skills to match. Rally to Call for the Completion of East Side Pedestrian Islands and Bikes Lane

Join Senator Serrano, pedestrians, cyclists, advocates, and other elected officials as they stand on the steps of City Hall to call for the completion of pedestrian and bike improvements on First and Second Avenues. As plans currently stand, the promised pedestrian islands and bike lanes stop at 34th Street, leaving a four-and-a-half mile gap through Midtown, the Upper East Side and Harlem. Attend, and make your voice heard!
