Senator Serrano Provides SCRIE Workshop in the South Bronx

(South Bronx, NY) - Senator Serrano hosted a free Senior Citizen Rent Increase Exemption (SCRIE) workshop at the Hope of Israel Senior Center in the South Bronx. Senator Serrano was joined by the New York City Department of Finance and the office of New York City Council Member Vanessa Gibson to provide information and answer questions about the SCRIE program. SCRIE offers eligible seniors an exemption from future rent increases. The seminar helped individuals learn more about the SCRIE program, eligibility requirements and how it can help constituents afford to stay in their homes.

Senator Serrano Receives Recognition for Achieving Highest Senate Score on Environmental Advocates Scorecard

(Albany, NY)- State Senator José M. Serrano (D-Manhattan/Bronx), Ranking Member on the Senate Committee on Cultural Affairs, Tourism, Parks & Recreation, was ranked one of the most environmentally conscious members of the New York State Senate. TheEPL/Environmental Advocates scorecard, which tracks legislators' votes on bills affecting New York's environment, gave Senator Serrano a score of 96.

(Bronx, NY)- Senator Serrano joined Council Member Vanessa L. Gibson and local community members in the Highbridge section of The Bronx for a street renaming ceremony in honor of the late Bishop Wenzell P. Jackson. Nelson Avenue at the corner of West 167th Street was renamed "Bishop Wenzell P. Jackson Way." Bishop Jackson, formerly the Pastor at Mount Hermon Baptist Church, was a unifier in the community, serving as Chairperson of Bronx Community Board 4

Senator Serrano Appears on Channel ABC 7's 'Tiempo" Discussing Immigration

(New York, NY)-  Senator Serrano appeared on ABC Channel 7's "Tiempo" program, a weekly program hosted by Joe Torres that features a round-table discussion about topics affecting and relating to the Latino community. Senator Serrano, along with Senator José Peralta, discussed the current state of immigration reform and how it affects the many immigrant families living throughout New York State and ways we can address immigration issues on a National and local level.
Senator Serrano has been a staunch supporter of the rights of immigrants both in the 29th Senate District and throughout New York State.

Serrano Celebrates the Grand Opening of the Newly Renovated Plaza in front of The Metropolitan Museum of Art

(Upper East Side)- Senator Serrano celebrated the grand opening of the newly renovated four block plaza in front of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Senator Serrano joined other elected officials, community leaders and museum executives for the introduction of the new $65 Million plaza in front of the museum on Fifth Avenue. Some of the newest additions to plaza include two fountains, new trees, additional seating and new lighting.

With a Senate district as large as the 29th, Senator Serrano feels it's important to bring his constituent services out to all the different neighborhoods he represents. Senator Serrano provides WEEKLY constituent hours across his 29th Senate district. Constituent hours will alternate weekly between senior centers and New York Public Libraries in the district. Notification will be given every MONDAY or feel free to call our office and ask when we will be at a location near you.

(East Harlem, NY)- Senator Jose M. Serrano co-sponsored New York City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito's 8th Annual "Step Up, Speak Out, Take Action" East Harlem Youth Fair. The youth fair was attended by hundreds of young adults who enjoyed musical performances, games, as well as food and beverages, all while raising awareness about gun violence and empowering the local youth with available services in the community.

(Bronx, NY)- Senator Serrano celebrated the Bronx's 100th anniversary on the Grand Concourse with "Boogie on the Boulevard," a celebration on the Grand Concourse.  The center lanes were closed to cars and open to festivities that included music, activities and programs hosted by art/cultural, civic, health organizations and artists.

Serrano and Bronx Borough President Rubén Díaz, Jr. Parents, children, students and elected officials filled the park for a day of excitement, food, music, performances and activities.

Senator Serrano Joins Mayor de Blasio in Announcing Increased Security for NYCHA Develoments

(East Harlem, NY)- Senator Serrano joined citywide elected officials for Mayor Bill de Blasio's major public safety announcement at the Wagner Houses in East Harlem. The Mayor revealed a detailed plan to reduce the amount of crime in public housing developments across New York City. Elected officials from all over the city were in attendance to help make this important announcement. Under the Mayor's new plan, $210 Million would be dedicated to improving the overall safety in NYCHA developments across the five boroughs - by providing additional lighting and surveillance, less scaffolding and increased community center hours.
