Senator Serrano Joins Attorney General Cuomo to Denounce Fraudulent Immigration Services

(New York, NY)- Senator José M. Serrano joined New York State Attorney General Andrew M. Cuomo, and Assemblyman Adriano Espaillat, to announce a lawsuit by the Attorney General's Office against two companies that provided fraudulent and unauthorized immigration services to countless victims in New York City.  The lawsuits were filed against International Immigrants Foundation, Inc. ("IIF"), International Professional Association, Inc. ("IPA"), and their President Edward Juarez, all operating in New York City and generating millions of dollars each year.

Senator Serrano Co-sponsors Disaster Preparedness Event on Roosevelt Island

Serrano, the American Redcross in Greater New York, and the NYC Office of Emergency Management co-sponsored a free presentation designed to prepare individuals and families for emergency situations. Attendees learned how to create a family disaster plan, build and maintain a supply kit, and keep loved ones safe and informed during times of disaster.

Senator Serrano Reads from Handel's Messiah

On Sunday, December 13, 2009, Senator José M. Serrano participated in the annual reading of George Frideric Handel’s Messiah at Lehman Center for the Performing Arts. This event, which draws large crowds from all around New York City, has become a holiday tradition in the Bronx. Music was performed by the Bronx Opera Chorus and conducted by Michael Spierman.“It is an honor to have been, once again, selected as an orator for this year’s performance,” said Senator Serrano, who is a proud supporter of the Bronx Opera Company.

Statement from Senator Serrano on Cultural Affairs, Tourism, Parks and Recreation

(Albany, NY)- On Wednesday December 2, 2009, Senator José M. Serrano (D- Manhattan/Bronx) and his Senate colleagues worked with Governor David Patterson to approve a bipartisan Deficit Reduction Plan (DRP)  aiming to protect jobs, prevent tax hikes and save critical school funding. "Responsible cuts were necessary, but we were able to 'cut with care' by protecting funding for health care and education- without placing an additional burden on the taxpayer," said Serrano.

NY-SPAN Public Meeting: Senator Serrano Encourages You to Submit Testimony

The Board was established to advise on the expansion of the current dedicated legislative television channel. The Advisory Board members have recommended that the television station be modeled after C-SPAN, and they would like your input on how this governmental affairs channel should operate.

Serrano Receives Prestigious Attorney General Award

Senator José M. Serrano was presented with the Attorney General’s prestigious Distinguished Public Service Award in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month. It was awarded by Attorney General Andrew Cuomo to exemplary New Yorkers who have been of service to the Latino community and to society at large. Senator Serrano Joins Local Volunteers on It's My Park Day

Senator José M. Serrano was proud to join neighborhood volunteers at It's My Park Day at Franz Sigel Park on the Grand Concourse.   "Although I wasn't able to get there in time to help with the actual planting, I was so pleased to thank and congratulate the local volunteers for working hard - in the rain, I might add - to ensure that our local park looks its best," said Serrano. Senator Serrano, who planted tulip and daffodil bulbs in last fall's Park Day believes that pride in one's community is one of the strongest ways to uplift a neighborhood.

Free Flu-shot Event!

On October 22, Senator Serrano took part in a free flu-shot event at Julia de Burgos- Taller Boriqua in East Harlem. 150 shots were administered by New York Presbyterian to seniors from the Community.

“It is a pleasure to see local seniors getting the opportunity to receive seasonal influenza vaccines free of cost, and in their own neighborhood,” said Serrano. “Thanks to the hard work of the nurses and New York-Presbyterian staff, there will be 150 less cases of flu in East Harlem this season.”
