Senator Serrano Joins Local Volunteers on It's My Park Day

Senator José M. Serrano was proud to join neighborhood volunteers at It's My Park Day at Franz Sigel Park on the Grand Concourse.   "Although I wasn't able to get there in time to help with the actual planting, I was so pleased to thank and congratulate the local volunteers for working hard - in the rain, I might add - to ensure that our local park looks its best," said Serrano. Senator Serrano, who planted tulip and daffodil bulbs in last fall's Park Day believes that pride in one's community is one of the strongest ways to uplift a neighborhood.

Free Flu-shot Event!

On October 22, Senator Serrano took part in a free flu-shot event at Julia de Burgos- Taller Boriqua in East Harlem. 150 shots were administered by New York Presbyterian to seniors from the Community.

“It is a pleasure to see local seniors getting the opportunity to receive seasonal influenza vaccines free of cost, and in their own neighborhood,” said Serrano. “Thanks to the hard work of the nurses and New York-Presbyterian staff, there will be 150 less cases of flu in East Harlem this season.”

Senator Serrano Honored for Advocacy Against Domestic Violence

Today Senator Serrano was honored for his support of the Mount Sinai Sexual Assault and Violence Intervention Program (SAVI), and for his commitment to combating sexual assault and domestic violence in underserved areas.

“It is vital that survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault have advocates  and counselors available to support them through a process that is often very painful,” said Senator Serrano.

Serrano Congratulates Chita Rivera for Receiving Highest Honor

Senator José M. Serrano (D- Manhattan/Bronx) today congratulated Puerto Rican-American Broadway icon Chita Rivera, who was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Obama in the White House yesterday. The Medal of Freedom is the highest medal that can be awarded to a civilian in the United States.   “As someone with a deep appreciation for the arts, I am overjoyed that this honor has been bestowed upon someone as deserving as Chita Rivera,” said Senator Serrano.

I applaud the City for its proactive strategies to combat the shortage of healthy and affordable food throughout the five boroughs. Last year, I convened a task force of local stakeholders to address concerns and identify solutions in East Harlem, and my office even mapped out the closures of several local grocery stores. As part of that process, I had the opportunity to meet with representatives from the Department of City Planning and the Mayor’s Office, and I was impressed by their expertise and thorough understanding of the problem.

Albany, NY- Over the past several months, Senator José M. Serrano (D-Manhattan/Bronx), Assemblyman Michael Gianaris (D-Queens) and the NYS Stimulus Oversight Group have led an initiative to ensure that Federal Stimulus funds are utilized with utmost efficiency. A Stimulus Oversight Panel launched yesterday by Governor Paterson incorporates many of the major components of a bill introduced by Serrano and Gianaris.
