Serrano Bill to Strengthen Gun Control in NY State Parks Passes Cultural Affairs, Tourism, Parks & Recreation Committee

Albany, NY – Senator José M. Serrano moved quickly to ensure safety at state parks, in the wake of a reckless pro-gun provision that moved through Congress last month.

The provision, tucked into a bill on credit card rules, allows park visitors to carry concealed weapons in national parks unless otherwise prohibited by state law.

Serrano Statement on Shooting of Police Officer

Senator José M. Serrano (D-Manhattan/Bronx) expressed both grief and deep concern following the death of Omar J. Edwards, an off-duty police officer shot on East 125th Street last night, apparently by a plainclothes officer.

"I will be meeting with the Manhattan District Attorney's Office this Sunday to learn more about what happened, and discuss next steps," said Serrano.

Serrano Sends Message to Community in Support of Marriage Equality

Throughout my career as a public official, I have strongly supported Marriage Equality. Moreover, I am a co-sponsor of the Senate bill (S.4401) that will provide same-sex couples the same opportunity to enter into civil marriages as opposite-sex couples. I consider Marriage Equality a part of the ongoing struggle for civil rights in this country. State government must take comprehensive action, both on the legislative and budgetary fronts, and I applaud Governor Paterson for his leadership.

NYSCA FUNDING 

"We were able to restore more than $4 million to the New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA)," said Serrano, the Chair of the Committee on Cultural Affairs, Tourism, Parks & Recreation. Together with additional funding from the federal government, this totals more than $7 million.

Senator Serrano Flips the Switch on the Empire State

Albany, NY - March 28, 2009 - A resolution introduced by Senator José M. Serrano (D-Manhattan/Bronx) which requested New Yorkers turn off their lights for an hour this evening,  unanimously passed through the New York State Senate on Monday.

The resolution requests that Governor David Paterson adopt 8:30 p.m., Saturday, March 28, 2009 as “Earth Hour” in an show of solidarity against global climate change. New York State residents joined millions of people from over 4,000 cities around the world in voluntarily turning off their lights for the hour.
