 Senator Serrano joined the River Park Towers community and other elected officials to celebrate River Park Towers Family Day. The yearly celebration took place in Roberto Clemente State Park and  served as an opportunity for the River Park Towers community to come together with family and friends and enjoy time outdoors. Senator Serrano is sponsoring a Summer Reading Program for children in grades 4 through 6! As the school year comes to an end, it is important to keep our children's minds active and learning throughout the summer. Parents must register at www.nyread.com to be supplied with the reading materials, including a reading list, list of public libraries in your area, and a reading journal. Upon successful completion, each student will receive a certificate from Senator Serrano and a bookmark!

Senator Serrano Honors the life of East Harlem Community Advocate Yolanda Sanchez with Legislative Resolution

(New York, NY)- A Senate Resolution sponsored by State Senator Jose M. Serrano (D-Manhattan/Bronx), honoring the life and accomplishments of long-time East Harlem community advocate, Yolanda Sanchez, passed the New York State Senate today."Last week, East Harlem experienced a huge loss in the passing of Yolanda Sanchez," said Senator Serrano. "Yolanda was a true pioneer in the Puerto Rican Community, and served as not only an example, but as an inspiration to everyone with whom she came in contact. Her commitment to service is what led many of our current generation of Latino leaders to get involved in social and public service."

Senator Serrano marched in the 55th Annual Puerto Rican Day parade, which takes place along 5th Avenue in Manhattan. The parade is widely attended by over one million people of all nationalities and celebrates the history and culture of the Puerto Rican people."This annual celebration reminds us all of the trajectory Puerto Ricans have traveled in the United States, particularly New York City," said Senator Serrano. As part of an initiative to detect and prevent breast cancer, Senator Serrano and the Project Renewal Scan Van Program sponsored free mammogram screenings in the 28th Senate district. Eligible women received free screenings in Yorkville, East Harlem, the Bronx and Roosevelt Island.

Serrano (D-Manhattan/Bronx) and City Council Member Melissa Mark-Viverito (D-Manhattan/Bronx) today expressed their heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of 12 year old Joel Morales from Jefferson Houses in East Harlem, and spoke out against bullying in schools. On Tuesday, the young student took his life after enduring continued harrassment by bullies."My thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends of Joel Morales," said Senator José Serrano.

Senator Serrano today attended "It's My Park Day" at Franz Sigel Park in the Bronx!  This event was sponsored by William Casari and Partnerships for Parks. Partnerships for Parks is a joint program of City Parks Foundation and the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation. “It’s My Park Day” is celebrated by thousands of New Yorkers who volunteer to help beautify their local parks by painting, planting bulbs, and providing general clean-up among other ways.
