Serrano Bill to Strengthen Gun Control in NY State Parks Passes Cultural Affairs, Tourism, Parks & Recreation Committee

Albany, NY – Senator José M. Serrano moved quickly to ensure safety at state parks, in the wake of a reckless pro-gun provision that moved through Congress last month.

The provision, tucked into a bill on credit card rules, allows park visitors to carry concealed weapons in national parks unless otherwise prohibited by state law.


Bills Approved by the Cultural Affairs, Tourism, Parks and Recreation Committee

On Wednesday, May 27, 2009 the Cultural Affairs, Tourism, Parks and Recreation Committee approved the following five bills, four of which will proceed to the Senate calendar where they will be reviewed for a floor vote. Bill S2532A will go to the Senate's Finance Committee.


Serrano Participates in Round Table on Naturally Occurring Cultural Districts

The roundtable was hosted by Brooklyn’sPratt Center for Community Development and the Fourth Arts Block, theleadership organization for Manhattan’s East 4th Street CulturalDistrict.


Senator Serrano Joins The Orchestra of the Bronx for their Annual Production of Handel's Messiah

(Bronx, NY)- Senator Serrano joined The Orchestra of the Bronx at Bronx Community College for a presentation of Handel's Messiah. Serrano, who is a long-time advocate for the arts, served as one of the orators for this annual holiday event. The event is widely-attended and has become a holiday tradition for the Bronx community. The Orchestra of the Bronx (The Bronx Opera Chorus and soloists), conducted by Michael Spearman, presented the words in Handel's timeless musical settings.


Senator Serrano Celebrates the 37th Annual Three Kings Day Parade

(East Harlem, NY) - Senator José M. Serrano joined El Museo del Barrio, colleagues in government and the community in celebrating the 37th Annual Three Kings Day festivities in East Harlem. The annual celebration culminates in a parade in the streets of El Barrio, bringing together local residents, families, school groups and community organizations from all over New York City.


Senator Serrano Meets with the Coalition of Living Museums

(Albany, NY)- Senator Serrano met with a group from the Coalition of Living Museums (CLM). CLM  provides support to 112 organizations statewide, including the Bronx Zoo and the NY Botanical Garden. The group met with Serrano to advocate for much needed funding in support of these living museums, zoos and botanical gardens. To help make their point, the group brought with them Scooter, an Eastern Screech owl.

An enthusiastic crowd packed the auditorium for a morning of brunch, live performances and an award ceremony honoring exemplary leaders in the community.
