(Albany, NY)-The New York State Senate today unanimously passed a bill (S7985/A10392), sponsored by Senator José M. Serrano (D-Manhattan/Bronx), that will improve the governance of the Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation (RIOC), while making it more representative of the residents of the area by improving accountability and increasing transparency and openness within the Corporation.
Committed to meeting the needs of individuals and families affected by the downturn in the economy, Senator José M. Serrano attended a press conference on the steps of New York City Hall to advocate for the passage of the bill HR 4268, “Put America to Work Act,” and for the introduction of a similar Community Jobs bill in the U.S. Senate.
Today Senator Serrano was honored for his support of the Mount Sinai Sexual Assault and Violence Intervention Program (SAVI), and for his commitment to combating sexual assault and domestic violence in underserved areas.
“It is vital that survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault have advocates and counselors available to support them through a process that is often very painful,” said Senator Serrano.
Senator Serrano was on Roosevelt Island for the culmination of the Island Kids Summer Camp. The camp is for children ages 5 to 13, and its programming includes swimming, sports, arts and crafts, music, culinary arts, and weekly field trips. This program offers partial and full scholarships to low-income families, who might otherwise not be able to participate. The 2009 season kicked off on July 7th, and there was an upbeat closing ceremony on August 26th.
July 8, 2009 Bronx, NY – State Senator José M. Serrano (D-Manhattan/Bronx), the New Settlement Parent Action Committee (PAC), and the Gambian Society today called upon Mayor Bloomberg to include Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha in the public school holiday calendar. This followed a near-unanimous vote in the City Council last week.
(Bronx, NY) - Senator Serrano marched in the annual Bronx Dominican parade, which took place along the Grand Concourse in the Bronx. The parade, which is widely attended by thousands of people across all nationalities, honors and celebrates the history and culture of the Dominican people.
(Bronx, NY) - Senator Serrano joined members of the community at the New York Botanical Garden's Annual Holiday Christmas Tree and Menorah Lighting celebrations. The festivities included the grand opening of the Holiday Train Show and the lighting ceremonies featuring song selections by the Westchester Chordsmen.
“It's great to be able to join the community for the holiday festivities at the New York Botanical Gardens," said Senator Serrano. "Each year I look forward to gathering with the community to celebrate the start of the holiday season. During this time of year it is important for us to focus on the things that are truly important: friends, neighbors and family. I want to thank the New York Botanical Gardens for this wonderful annual festivity,” concluded Serrano
