Senator Serrano Advocates for Funding of School-Based Health Centers

(Albany, NY)- Senator Serrano met student and parent advocates on behalf of The Children's Aid Society to discuss the important role they play within New York schools. They were among hundreds who rallied in Albany in support of preserving funding for school-based health centers (SBHCs). SBHCs are preventive health care centers that deliver onsite care to school children.

The State Senate Declares May as Lupus Awareness Month

(Albany, NY)- Yesterday the New York State Senate unanimously passed a Resolution proclaiming May 2011 as Lupus Awareness Month in the State of New York. The Senate Resolution was sponsored by Senator Joseph A. Griffo and co-sponsored by Senator Jose M. Serrano. The Resolution also passed the New York State Assembly where it was sponsored by Assemblywoman Vanessa Gibson.Lupus is a chronic disease that affects the immune system, causing it to become hyperactive and attack normal tissue. Of those affected with the illness, roughly 90 percent are women. Lupus is most prevalent among African Americans, Hispanics, Native Americans and Asians.

Today the New York State Senate unanimously passed a Resolution  (J767/K347) requesting that Governor Andrew M. Cuomo proclaim May 2011 as Lupus Awareness Month in the State of New York.  The Resolution was sponsored in the Senate by Senator Joseph A. Griffo and co-sponsored by Senator José M. Serrano.

Lupus is a chronic disease affecting the immune system, causing it to become hyperactive and attack normal tissue. 90 percent of the thousands of people diagnosed with lupus each year are women, and the illness is most prevalent among African Americans, Hispanics, Native Americans, and Asians.

Senator Serrano Honored for Advocacy Against Domestic Violence

Today Senator Serrano was honored for his support of the Mount Sinai Sexual Assault and Violence Intervention Program (SAVI), and for his commitment to combating sexual assault and domestic violence in underserved areas.

“It is vital that survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault have advocates  and counselors available to support them through a process that is often very painful,” said Senator Serrano.
