Serrano Joins Marriage Equality Advocates on Steps of the Bronx Courthouse

Senator José M. Serrano today joined government colleagues and gay rights advocates on the steps of the Bronx Courthouse, to urge lawmakers to vote in favor of a Marriage Equality bill.  "It's a travesty that in this day and age there are people among us who don't have the same rights as others," said Senator Serrano. "Marriage Equality is one of the most critical civil rights issues of our time, and we must not back down until we have equal rights for all the people of New York State"The press conference was organized by Brida Bronx Rainbow Independent Democratic Association, Bronx Marriage Equality Now, the Bronx Community Pride Center, and Bronx District Leader Kenny Agosto.


Serranos Applaud Obama Decision on the ‘Defense of Marriage Act’

Serrano today applauded the Obama Administration’s decision to stop defending the federal “Defense of Marriage Act,” which bars the recognition of same-sex marriage.“President Obama and his advisors are to be commended for this brave and just decision to end their defense of the unconstitutional ‘Defense of Marriage Act’,” said Congressman Serrano. “That law, passed during the culture wars of the 1990s, does nothing to expand rights in this nation, and everything to curtail them. I firmly believe that our duty is to expand and defend the protections that the Constitution lays out and to work to end discriminatory laws and policies.

Serrano Statement on Marriage Equality Bill

(New York, NY)-- State Senator José M. Serrano (D-Manhattan/Bronx) expressed disappointment that a marriage equality bill was not brought to the Senate floor for a vote today. "When we look at past civil-rights movements, there were always those who were on the wrong side of history by believing that changes in archaic laws would create havoc within our society," said Serrano.


Senator Serrano Honored for Advocacy Against Domestic Violence

Today Senator Serrano was honored for his support of the Mount Sinai Sexual Assault and Violence Intervention Program (SAVI), and for his commitment to combating sexual assault and domestic violence in underserved areas.

“It is vital that survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault have advocates  and counselors available to support them through a process that is often very painful,” said Senator Serrano.
