Today Senator Serrano was honored for his support of the Mount Sinai Sexual Assault and Violence Intervention Program (SAVI), and for his commitment to combating sexual assault and domestic violence in underserved areas.
“It is vital that survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault have advocates and counselors available to support them through a process that is often very painful,” said Senator Serrano.
Senator Serrano was on Roosevelt Island for the culmination of the Island Kids Summer Camp. The camp is for children ages 5 to 13, and its programming includes swimming, sports, arts and crafts, music, culinary arts, and weekly field trips. This program offers partial and full scholarships to low-income families, who might otherwise not be able to participate. The 2009 season kicked off on July 7th, and there was an upbeat closing ceremony on August 26th.

Serrano joined Prince Harry (Prince Henry of Wales), New York Yankee 1st Baseman Mark Teixiera and Harlem RBI to celebrate the announcement of The Royal Foundation's partnership with Harlem RBI's Project Coach, a youth mentorship program. Harlem RBI, a nonprofit organization designed to provide inner-city youth with opportunities, partnered with Prince Harry to implement Project Coach to help local youths recognize their potential and realize their dreams by coaching and playing on teams.
(East Harlem, NY) - Senator José M. Serrano co-sponsored the 7th Annual Teen Fair “Step Up, Speak Out, Take Action” with Council Member Melissa Mark-Viverito in East Harlem. The fair, designed in part to bring awareness to youth and gun violence within the community, also gathered local residents and community organizations to highlight the importance of community involvement, youth empowerment and education.
(Albany, NY)- Senator Serrano met with local youth groups representing Harlem RBI and Goddard Riverside programs, who traveled to Albany for Youth Action Day. These groups met with Serrano to advocate for much needed funding for the Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP).
(Bronx, NY) - Senator Serrano co-sponsored New York City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito's "Dream Big: Bronx Youth Fair" at St. Mary's Park. The event was also co-sponsored by Serrano's father, Congressman José E. Serrano and Bronx Borough President Rubén Díaz, Jr. Parents, children, students and elected officials filled the park for a day of excitement, food, music, performances and activities.
