Senator Serrano participated in a neighborhood Youth Resource Fair in the Bronx. The event, which was organized by Bronx Borough President Ruben Díaz, Jr. and the NYPD, provided information to the community about youth services such as sports leagues, after school programs, health programs, mentoring, job opportunities and colleges.
Senator Serrano celebrated the 19th Anniversary Celebration of Maggie’s Garden in East Harlem. The Senator joined Maria Amurrio, attendant of Maggie’s Garden, volunteers of the community garden, and other community residents for this celebration. The celebration provided attendees with information about the garden and entertainment.
Senator Serrano joined Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer at his Back to School Festival in East Harlem. The festival provided parents and children with plenty of fun and informative activities geared towards education. Attendees of the event received free health screenings and information about District 4 Public Schools, Child Daycare Services, and College Prep services.
Senator Serrano co-sponsored with Councilwoman Melissa Mark-Viverito the 6th Annual Teen Fair “Step Up, Speak Out, Take Action” in East Harlem. The fair, designed to bring awareness to youth and gun violence within the community, gathered local residents and community organizations to show the importance of community involvement.
Senator Serrano celebrated the ribbon cutting of Manhattan Neighborhood Network’s (MNN) El Barrio Fire House Community Media Center in East Harlem. MNN’s El Barrio Fire House and Community Center was transformed in 2011 from a Fire House to a production and broadcast facility.
Senator Serrano joined the River Park Towers community and other elected officials to celebrate River Park Towers Family Day. The yearly celebration took place in Roberto Clemente State Park and served as an opportunity for the River Park Towers community to come together with family and friends and enjoy time outdoors. The event featured tabling by numerous organizations offering resources to the community, as well as activities, games, and entertainment.
Senator Serrano called for Bronx residents to participate in the Bronx CAN Health Initiative, organized by Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr.’s office, which brings together individuals, elected officials, government agencies, doctors, health providers, schools, civic-minded groups and physical fitness center of all kinds to promote the types of behaviors that lead to healthy lifestyles.
Senator Serrano is sponsoring a Summer Reading Program for children in grades 4 through 6! As the school year comes to an end, it is important to keep our children's minds active and learning throughout the summer. Serrano (D-Manhattan/Bronx), honoring the life and accomplishments of long-time East Harlem community advocate, Yolanda Sanchez, passed the New York State Senate today."Last week, East Harlem experienced a huge loss in the passing of Yolanda Sanchez," said Senator Serrano. "Yolanda was a true pioneer in the Puerto Rican Community, and served as not only an example, but as an inspiration to everyone with whom she came in contact. Senator Serrano marched in the 55th Annual Puerto Rican Day parade, which takes place along 5th Avenue in Manhattan. The parade is widely attended by over one million people of all nationalities and celebrates the history and culture of the Puerto Rican people."This annual celebration reminds us all of the trajectory Puerto Ricans have traveled in the United States, particularly New York City," said Senator Serrano. "It is always an honor to march in this parade, embrace our culture and be reminded of the contributions Puerto Ricans have made in New York.
As part of an initiative to detect and prevent breast cancer, Senator Serrano and the Project Renewal Scan Van Program sponsored free mammogram screenings in the 28th Senate district. Eligible women received free screenings in Yorkville, East Harlem, the Bronx and Roosevelt Island.
Senator Serrano co-sponsored a Meet and Greet Resource Fair at the Andrew Freedman Home in the Bronx with Assemblywoman Vanessa Gibson. Local community organizations encouraged the community to learn about and utilize all the resources available to them in the areas of education, financial services, social services, healthcare, and housing access.
