Senator Serrano Weighs in on Gun Control at NYU Panel

(New York, NY) – Senator José M. Serrano served as a panelist for an important discussion at NYU entitled: “Triggering the Debate: Race, Gun Control, and Mental Illness.” The panel addressed the national debate regarding gun laws and considered the complicated history that race and mental illness has historically played in the debate. “Recent acts of gun violence are alarming. My colleagues and I must do everything possible to pass legislation that will protect the people of New York," said Senator Serrano. “As an elected official, it is also very important to me that we urge our legislators on a national level for tougher measures that will ensure that guns do not end up in the wrong hands,” concluded Serrano.

Senator Serrano Drafts Letter Urging U.S. Senators to Place Tighter Restrictions on Gun Sales

"Each year, countless individuals are victims of senseless and avoidable gun violence. My colleagues and I in the Senate Democratic Conference have continuously pushed for tougher measures on a state level that will ensure that our gun violence is curbed. However, more must be done on a national level. Today I sent a letter urging United States Senators to increase gun control measures by requiring background checks and record-keeping on all U.S. gun sales. As legislators, we must do all that we can to ensure that our constituents, the people of New York and the people of this Nation, are kept safe."

Senator Serrano Sponsors Resolution Honoring the Life of Rev. Wenzell Jackson

(Albany, NY)-A Senate Resolution sponsored by State Senator José M. Together, we are prepared to deliver 27 critical votes in favor of legislation to raise the minimum wage for workers. Serrano/Galef Call for Revamp of Member Item System in Light of Persistent Abuse

Senator Serrano & Assembly Member Galef Call for Complete Member Item Overhaul (Albany, NY)- Senator José M. Serrano and Assemblywoman Sandy Galef continue their call for a complete overhaul of the member item system. Member items, or legislative grants, is money that is given to members of the New York State legislature through the state budget for local community organizations. Historically these funds have had very little oversight and no formal vetting process, which unfortunately opens the door for abuse.

Statement from Senator Serrano Re: the Decision of the DEC to delay Hydrofracking until Public Review is Complete

(New York, NY)- State Senator José M. Serrano applauded the decision by Joseph Martens, Commissioner of the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), to delay the issuing of the final Supplemental Generic Environmental Impact Statement (SGEIS) on high-volume hydraulic fracturing in New York State until the Department of Health (DOH) completes public review of the health impacts of the process. "I am pleased to learn that the DOH is taking more time to carefully complete the public review process of hydrofracking," said Senator Serrano. "It would be blatantly irresponsible to permit hydraulic fracturing to be carried out without thoroughly analyzing its possible consequences on the health of the public. "

(Albany, NY)- Senator Serrano met student and parent advocates on behalf of The Children's Aid Society to discuss the important role they play within New York schools. They were among hundreds who rallied in Albany in support of preserving funding for school-based health centers (SBHCs). SBHCs are preventive health care centers that deliver onsite care to school children.

Severe Weather Advisory Issued for NYC

At the direction of the Mayor, the public is hereby advised that significant snowfall has been forecast starting today in the afternoon through Saturday morning.

1. The public is urged to avoid all unnecessary driving during the duration of the storm and, until further directed, to use public transportation wherever possible. As New Yorkers are making their commuting plans for tomorrow, they should be aware that driving conditions will be difficult.  If you must drive, use extreme caution.

Libraries are beacons in our communities, offering ESL classes, resume help, computer literacy and educational opportunities.
