Serrano Honored for Leadership on Environmental Issues

The New York State Federation of the Hispanic Chambers of Commerce honored Senator Serrano with their Green Legislator’s  Award for being the most environmentally friendly member of the State Senate.   

According to the EPL/Environmental Advocates preliminary scorecard, which tracks legislators’ votes on bills affecting New York’s environment, Senator Serrano had a perfect score of 67 out of 67.

Vigil for Camila Guzman

On August 1, Camila Guzman was found murdered in her Harlem apartment on East 110th Street.  Her tragic death shows the prevalence of violence against transgender women in this country. Camila’s family, friends, and community allies will gather to honor her memory.

Serrano and other Roosevelt Island Elected Officials Rally to Save the Post Office

Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney, State Senator José M. Serrano, Assembly Micah Kellner, City Council Member Jessica Lappin, and Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation President Leslie Torres joined Roosevelt Island community leaders and residents for a rally to urge the United States Postal Service to keep the Roosevelt Island Post Office in operation.

NYPD National Night Out

Today, Senator Jose M. Serrano visited the 25th and the 40th precincts to honor New York City Police Officers and present to them a proclamation at the 28th annual National Night Out.“It is very important for us to acknowledge and thank our local police officers for the great work they do in our communities,” said Senator Serrano. “Not only is New York City one of the largest cities in the world, it’s also the safest. This is in great part due to the amazing men and women who work daily to improve our communities and keep us safe.”

Senator Serrano Encourages City to Implement Arts Education Blueprint

(New York, NY)- Senator José M. Serrano (D-Manhattan/Bronx) today applauded the Panel for Education Policy's Arts Education Advisory Committee for developing a blueprint consisting of goals and recommendations to enhance arts education in New York City schools, and encouraged the City to carry out its implementation. 
 

In 2009 Senator Serrano sponsored legislation (S6106), which passed the Senate, to create an advisory committee to advise the Chancellor on arts education and to work to improve compliance with State arts education requirements. Despite the fact that the legislation did not pass the Assembly, in March, 2010, under the leadership of Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, the City's Arts Education Advisory Committee was created.
