Bronx Dominican Parade

Today, Senator Serrano joined his father, Congressman Jose E. Serrano, for the Bronx Dominican Parade. The parade has become a yearly tradition in the Bronx and is a lively celebration of Dominican Heritage that makes its way down the Grand Concourse each year.“It is such a pleasure to be a part of this wonderful celebration,” said Senator Serrano. "There are now more Dominicans in the Bronx than in Washington Heights, and it is so delightful to march down the concourse with my Dominican constituents, and to see everyone come together to celebrate the rich and vibrant Dominican culture.”

Opening of the Pool at Roberto Clemente State Park

Today, Senator Serrano attended the re-opening of the Roberto Clemente State Park pool. The renovated facility includes an Olympic size pool, a sprinkler park for children, a wading pool, a diving tank, and a new indoor basketball court with locker rooms. “With the sky high temperatures that are sweeping the Northeast coast, the re-opening of the pool could not have come at a better time,” said Senator Serrano. “Fortunately, our residents now have a way to combat the heat by taking advantage of this much needed facility. I’m extremely proud to have supported such a fantastic project, which will provide access to recreation for countless families in the Bronx for years to come.”

Senator Serrano at Bronx Constituent Hours

Senator Serrano and his staff held their monthly Bronx Constituent Hours today at River Park Towers."While we do a tremendous amount of work out of our District Office in East Harlem, there is no substitute for direct interaction with my constituents here in the Bronx," said the Senator. The Serrano Constituent Services team holds roving hours in the Bronx each month, and on Roosevelt Island (RIOC Offices, 591 Main Street) on the first Tuesday of every month. No appointment is necessary.

Family Day at River Park Towers!

Senator Serrano, his father, Congressman Jose E. Serrano, and Assembly Member Vanessa Gibson joined the River Park Towers Community for Family Day in Roberto Clemente State Park. This yearly celebration is an opportunity for the River Park Towers Community to come together with family and friends and enjoy time outdoors."Each year, it's a joy to get together with the River Park Towers community to celebrate the summer season and meet with my constituents," said Senator Serrano. "This is a wonderful family tradition that I hope continues for many years to come."

Serrano today attended Bronx Pride 2011 in Crotona Park.  The event was organized by the Bronx Community Pride Center, which provides much-needed services and programming for LGBT individuals in the borough of the Bronx. The Senator presented a Proclamation to the organization’s executive Director, Dirk McCall, a long-time community leader.

Unveiling of Dra. Evelina Antonetty Way

Senator Jose M. Serrano today joined Bronx community members in the renaming of the intersection of Prospect Avenue and 156th Street in the Bronx to Dra. Evelina Antonetty Way.Dr. Evelina Antonetty was an exceptional community organizer and civil rights activist who advocated on behalf of people of all races. Under her leadership, the United Bronx Parents (UBP) was formed. The agency provides essential social services and programs for low-income families in the Bronx.

Serrano Ranked Most Environmentally Friendly Senate Member

(Albany, NY) State Senator José M. Serrano (D-Manhattan/Bronx) was the most environmentally conscious member of the New York State Senate in 2011.  According to the EPL/Environmental Advocates preliminary scorecard, which tracks legislators’ votes on bills affecting New York’s environment, Senator Serrano had a perfect score of 67 out of 67.“I'm glad to have the opportunity to have a positive impact on New York’s environmental decisions, and I thank EPL/Environmental Advocates for honoring my commitment to improving our state’s air, land, water and public health,” said Senator Serrano, who has been a longtime advocate for environmental issues in Albany.
