Senator Serrano Urges Leaders to Restore State Parks Funding

Governor David A. Patterson's proposed budget significantly slashes funding for New York State Parks. If the proposed budget is enacted, 40 parks will undergo service reductions, and 91 State Parks and Historic Sites will be forced to close.

Senator José M. Serrano, Chair of the Senate Committee on Cultural Affairs, Tourism, Parks and Recreation, has distributed the sign-on letter below- addressed to legislative leadership- to all members of the New York State Senate. He has garnered bipartisan support in favor of restoring funds for State Parks.

Serrano Chairs Committee Meeting with Arts Organizations Regarding Governor's Proposed Budget, Discusses Patterson's 21-Day Amendment

(Albany, NY)- After chairing a meeting of the Cultural Affairs, Tourism, Parks and Recreation Committee yesterday, Senator José M. Serrano (D-Manhattan/Bronx) reported that Governor David A. Patterson’s release of his 21-day amendment to the 2010-11 Executive Budget was a small step in the right direction in regards to the restoration of funding for the arts.

Serrano to Community: "Know Your Rights, Know Your Precinct"

On January 27th, Senator José M. Serrano co-hosted “Know Your Rights, Know Your Precinct,” an information session aiming to acquaint East Harlem immigrants with the resources available through the 23rd precinct. “No one’s immigration status should determine their safety,” said the Senator. “It is extremely important for immigrants everywhere to know their rights and to feel safe in the communities in which they reside.”

In response to the recent aftershocks in Haiti, Sen. José M. Serrano is urging New Yorkers to continue their much-needed support throughout the aftermath of this crisis.“The recent earthquake, and subsequent aftershocks have completely devastated Haiti’s capital of Port-au-Prince. The outpouring of support from New Yorkers has been a testament to the awareness and compassion of the people of this state. Senator Serrano Joins Attorney General Cuomo to Denounce Fraudulent Immigration Services

(New York, NY)- Senator José M. Serrano joined New York State Attorney General Andrew M. Cuomo, and Assemblyman Adriano Espaillat, to announce a lawsuit by the Attorney General's Office against two companies that provided fraudulent and unauthorized immigration services to countless victims in New York City.  The lawsuits were filed against International Immigrants Foundation, Inc. ("IIF"), International Professional Association, Inc. ("IPA"), and their President Edward Juarez, all operating in New York City and generating millions of dollars each year.

Senator Serrano Co-sponsors Disaster Preparedness Event on Roosevelt Island

Senator José M. Serrano, the American Redcross in Greater New York, and the NYC Office of Emergency Management co-sponsored a free presentation designed to prepare individuals and families for emergency situations. Attendees learned how to create a family disaster plan, build and maintain a supply kit, and keep loved ones safe and informed during times of disaster.

On Sunday, December 13, 2009, Senator José M. Serrano participated in the annual reading of George Frideric Handel’s Messiah at Lehman Center for the Performing Arts. This event, which draws large crowds from all around New York City, has become a holiday tradition in the Bronx. Music was performed by the Bronx Opera Chorus and conducted by Michael Spierman.“It is an honor to have been, once again, selected as an orator for this year’s performance,” said Senator Serrano, who is a proud supporter of the Bronx Opera Company.

Statement from Senator Serrano on Cultural Affairs, Tourism, Parks and Recreation

(Albany, NY)- On Wednesday December 2, 2009, Senator José M. Serrano (D- Manhattan/Bronx) and his Senate colleagues worked with Governor David Patterson to approve a bipartisan Deficit Reduction Plan (DRP)  aiming to protect jobs, prevent tax hikes and save critical school funding. "Responsible cuts were necessary, but we were able to 'cut with care' by protecting funding for health care and education- without placing an additional burden on the taxpayer," said Serrano.
