Serrano Climbs Aboard to Save the M15

On Friday morning Senator Serrano was proactive in his opposition to the proposed service cuts for one of the most heavily used bus lines in the country. During the 7 am rush hour, Serrano, his staff, and the Transport Workers Union boarded buses on Second Avenue, and handed out literature encouraging citizens to speak out against the planned cuts on the M15 bus.  The MTA is proposing to remove 9 buses from the M15 route, which operates between Second Avenue and South Ferry.

Serrano at Island Kids Celebration

Senator Serrano was on Roosevelt Island for the culmination of the Island Kids Summer Camp. The camp is for children ages 5 to 13, and its programming includes swimming, sports, arts and crafts, music, culinary arts, and weekly field trips. This program offers partial and full scholarships to low-income families, who might otherwise not be able to participate. The 2009 season kicked off on July 7th, and there was an upbeat closing ceremony on August 26th.

Senator Serrano celebrated with Lincoln Center and the The Big Three Palladium Orchestra at the 52 People for Progress at 52 Park concert in the Bronx. Senator Serrano as well as New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, spoke about the importance of accessible arts programming in the South Bronx.

Serrano Congratulates Chita Rivera for Receiving Highest Honor

Senator José M. Serrano (D- Manhattan/Bronx) today congratulated Puerto Rican-American Broadway icon Chita Rivera, who was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Obama in the White House yesterday. The Medal of Freedom is the highest medal that can be awarded to a civilian in the United States.   “As someone with a deep appreciation for the arts, I am overjoyed that this honor has been bestowed upon someone as deserving as Chita Rivera,” said Senator Serrano.

Senator Serrano Testimony for City Planning Commission Public Hearing on the FRESH Program

I applaud the City for its proactive strategies to combat the shortage of healthy and affordable food throughout the five boroughs. Last year, I convened a task force of local stakeholders to address concerns and identify solutions in East Harlem, and my office even mapped out the closures of several local grocery stores. As part of that process, I had the opportunity to meet with representatives from the Department of City Planning and the Mayor’s Office, and I was impressed by their expertise and thorough understanding of the problem.

Senator Serrano Mourns the Passing of Senator Olga Mendez

New York, NY- Senator José M. Serrano (D-Manhattan/Bronx) expressed great sadness after learning of the death of former Senator Olga Mendez, the first Puerto Rican woman elected to the State Legislature in the State of New York.   "I am extremely saddened by the passing of Olga Mendez, a dear friend and mentor," said Serrano. "She was a true pioneer and an inspiration to the Latino communities of New York."

Albany, NY- Over the past several months, Senator José M. Serrano (D-Manhattan/Bronx), Assemblyman Michael Gianaris (D-Queens) and the NYS Stimulus Oversight Group have led an initiative to ensure that Federal Stimulus funds are utilized with utmost efficiency. A Stimulus Oversight Panel launched yesterday by Governor Paterson incorporates many of the major components of a bill introduced by Serrano and Gianaris.
