Albany, NY - Senator Serrano (D-Manhattan/Bronx) today highlighted major legislative triumphs during an otherwise difficult budget season.

"Never let a serious crisis go to waste," said Serrano, echoing the words of White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel. "In bad economic times, we find the political will to enact progressive reform."

Serrano said that comprehensive reforms to the State's notorious Rockefeller Drug Laws will significantly impact his district.

"We were able to restore more than $4 million to the New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA)," said Serrano, the Chair of the Committee on Cultural Affairs, Tourism, Parks & Recreation. Together with additional funding from the federal government, this totals more than $7 million.

Senator Serrano is joined by Maria Bonet, Outreach Counselor for the S.L.E. Lupus Foundation, at the workshop on Thursday evening.In conjunction with the S.L.E. Lupus Foundation, Senator Serrano hosted a Lupus awareness workshop in his district office.

We have finally brought the focus back to school districts that need the money most – and that includes East Harlem," said the Senator.

Albany, NY - March 28, 2009 - A resolution introduced by Senator José M. Serrano (D-Manhattan/Bronx) which requested New Yorkers turn off their lights for an hour this evening,  unanimously passed through the New York State Senate on Monday.

The resolution requests that Governor David Paterson adopt 8:30 p.m., Saturday, March 28, 2009 as “Earth Hour” in an show of solidarity against global climate change. New York State residents joined millions of people from over 4,000 cities around the world in voluntarily turning off their lights for the hour.

Senator Serrano sponsors Diabetes Workshop and Constituents Hours in the Bronx

Bronx, NY- March 27, 2009 - As part of his monthly Bronx Constituent Services Day, Senator José M. Serrano (D-Manhattan/Bronx) sponsored a Diabetes Workshop at the Highbridge Senior Center. The Senator has been extremely involved in issues related to public health, working on efforts to protect supermarkets in East Harlem and fighting diesel emissions related to the asthma epidemic.

Serrano Sponsors Not-for-profit Incorporation Workshop

More than 40 people attended a not-for-profit incorporation workshop on Tuesday evening. The event offered vital information on how organizations can apply for 501(c)(3) tax exemption status.

Senator Serrano sponsored the workshop along with the Bronx Council on the Arts and CheckSpring Bank. The Legal Aid Society's Community Development Project helped to organize the panel, which included Susan Chase, an attorney with the Project, and Alison King, and attorney at Kaye Scholer LLP.
