Senator Serrano Joins Council Member Melissa Mark-Viverito for Rafael Tufiño Way Street Renaming Ceremony

(East Harlem, NY)  - Senator José M. Serrano joined Council Member Melissa Mark-Viverito and local community members on East 103rd Street and  Lexington Avenue for a street renaming ceremony in honor of great Puerto Rican painter, Rafaelo Tufiño. The stretch of East 103rd Street, between Park and Third Avenues, in Manhattan will be renamed as "Rafael Tufiño Way." During the ceremony, Senator Serrano spoke on the importance of maintaining the cultural history of New York City.

Statement from Senator Serrano on the Passing of Reverend John Grange

(Bronx, NY) - State Senator José M. Serrano expressed his heartfelt sadness on the passing of beloved South Bronx priest, Reverend John Grange.  Fr. Grange was a pioneer in the South Bronx during the tough times of the 1970's, reaching out to and welcoming a growing Latino and immigrant population. Fr. Grange was ordained in the Catholic Church in 1966, and from then he became universally known as a tireless leader serving the people of the South Bronx, where he was born and raised.  
 
Fr. Grange was a fearless defender of his community, often organizing community rallies in support of social justice issues while promoting local empowerment and community engagement.

Serrano Achieves Highest Senate Score on Environmental Advocates Scorecard

(Albany, NY) State Senator José M. Serrano (D-Manhattan/Bronx), along with 10 of his colleagues from the Senate Democratic conference, were ranked highest amongst State Senators on the annual EPL/Environmental Advocates Scorecard. The scorecard tracks legislators' votes on bills affecting New York's environment. According to this year's rankings, 11 senators, including Serrano, voted correctly on all environmental bills that came up for a vote in the Senate Chamber.

Senator Serrano Joins Senator Liz Krueger in an Important Community Forum to Discuss new Federal Health Care Laws

(New York, NY) - State Senator José M. Serrano co-sponsored State Senator Liz Kruger's  “New York State of Health: What You Need to Know About Health Care Reform,” a community forum designed to inform constituents about the new Affordable Care Act. With open enrollment having officially started on October 1, 2013, individuals, families and small business owners are now able to enroll in new, affordable health insurance plans through the marketplace. The community forum served to make individuals aware of their options and learn what the new laws mean for New Yorkers.

Senator Serrano Stands With Tenants of 888 Grand Concourse to Demand Landlord Accountability

(Bronx, NY) - Senator José M. Serrano joined Community Action for Safe Apartments (CASA), other elected officials and tenants of 888 Grand Concourse to call for repairs on the building's premises. Frustration among tenants has intensified after months of being in court and failure of the landlord to adhere to a judge’s order to correct more than 340 violations to the residential building. Senator Serrano maintained that it is time to hold landlords accountable.

Senator Serrano Joins U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand and other Elected Officials Urging Congress to Restore the Protections of the Voting Rights Act

(South Bronx, NY) - Senator José M. Serrano joined U.S Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz, Jr., Congressman José E. Serrano, and other elected officials at the Bronx County Courthouse urging Congress to restore the protections of the Voting Rights Act. This past June, key provisions of the Voting Rights Act were gutted by the Supreme Court's decision to strike down Section 4(b) of the Act. This section of the law was used in determining which states and counties required close federal monitoring to help prevent suppression of minority voting.
