Senator Serrano Meets with "United Parents of Highbridge" to Discuss the Need for More After-School Programs

(Albany, NY) - Senator José M. Serrano met with a group of 40 students and parents, who traveled to Albany, on behalf of "United Parents of Highbridge." The group, from the Senator's district, met with the Senator to discuss the need for more after-school programming, as well as better funding for local public schools.

Senator Serrano Celebrates the 37th Annual Three Kings Day Parade

Senator Serrano Joins The Orchestra of the Bronx for their Annual Production of Handel's Messiah

(Bronx, NY)- Senator Serrano joined The Orchestra of the Bronx at Bronx Community College for a presentation of Handel's Messiah. Serrano, who is a long-time advocate for the arts, served as one of the orators for this annual holiday event. The event is widely-attended and has become a holiday tradition for the Bronx community. The Orchestra of the Bronx (The Bronx Opera Chorus and soloists), conducted by Michael Spearman, presented the words in Handel's timeless musical settings.

Senator Serrano Writes letter to NYCHA Urging for Repairs at Mitchell Houses Senior Center

(Bronx, NY)- Senator José M. Serrano wrote a letter to the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) expressing his concerns with regards to the lack of repairs at Mitchell Houses Senior Center in the Bronx. Serrano visited the center in November of last year and noticed the concerning and hazardous large opening in the ceiling adjacent to the entrance, which was the result of water damage. Serrano urged NYCHA to take into consideration the health and well-being of the seniors at the center being exposed to these health hazards. See below for letter.

The New York Common Pantry is a community-based food pantry dedicated to reducing hunger by providing New Yorkers with meals.

Senator Serrano Sponsors Free Flu Shots for the Community

(East Harlem, NY) - Senator José M. Serrano, in conjunction with the Visiting Nurse Service of New York (VNSNY), offered free flu shots to the community at his District Office.

“Going into these winter months it is important that we all protect ourselves from the flu virus and remain in good health,” said Senator Serrano. “Many thanks to the great RNs at the VNSNY for providing and administering the shots to constituents from across my district,” concluded Serrano.

Senator Serrano Speaks to Students at El Barrio's Renaissance Innovation High School About Local Civics & State Government

(East Harlem, NY) - Senator José M. Serrano spoke to government students at Renaissance Innovation High School about his career in New York government. The visit was an opportunity for the students to receive an inside look on working in government and civil service. Senator Serrano spoke of the importance of leadership, advocacy and fighting for the needs of the community.

"I had such a great time speaking with these impressive and poised students" said Senator Serrano. "They were so interested in learning more about government and very insightful about issues affecting our community on a local, state and national level. Their engaging questions allowed us to cover a broad range of subjects. I am very proud of them, and I hope to visit again soon," concluded Serrano.

Senator Serrano Participates in the New York Botanical Gardens Annual Holiday Festivities

(Bronx, NY) - Senator Serrano joined members of the community at the New York Botanical Garden's Annual Holiday Christmas Tree and Menorah Lighting celebrations. The festivities included the grand opening of the Holiday Train Show and the lighting ceremonies featuring song selections by the Westchester Chordsmen.

Senator Serrano stands with Upper West Siders to Preserve The Apthorp

(New York, NY) - State Senator José M. Serrano joined Council Member Gale Brewer and Assemblymember Linda B. Rosenthal at City Hall to provide testimony to prevent the addition of rooftop penthouses to The Apthorp, affectionately deemed the "Buckingham Palace of the Upper West Side." Senator Serrano spoke before the New York City Council's Landmark Preservation Commission, urging the committee to consider the historical and architectural integrity of the building, which occupies the full block between Broadway and West End Avenue and between West 78th and West 79th Streets.
