Senator Serrano Urges Senate Leadership to Make Universal Pre-Kindergarten a Priority this Year
(Albany, NY)- Senator José M. Serrano, Chair of the Senate Democratic Conference, expressed disappointment after comments by Senator Dean Skelos that universal pre-kindergarten would not come to the Senate floor for a vote this legislative session. The universal pre-kindergarten(UPK) bill would make pre-school accessible for all children.
(Albany, NY)- Senator Serrano met with a group from the Coalition of Living Museums (CLM). CLM provides support to 112 organizations statewide, including the Bronx Zoo and the NY Botanical Garden. The group met with Serrano to advocate for much needed funding in support of these living museums, zoos and botanical gardens. To help make their point, the group brought with them Scooter, an Eastern Screech owl.
(Albany, NY) - Senator Serrano advocated in support of raising the New York State minimum wage. On February 4, Serrano stood with other members of the Senate Democratic Conference for a press conference announcing the introduction of three bills relating to the New York State minimum wage. The legislation would: enable local governments to raise the minimum wage in their localities (S6516), expedite the increase of the State's minimum wage (S6518), and end the corporate tax credit for employees who pay workers the minimum wage (S6490).
(Bronx, NY) - Senator Serrano sponsored an important "Know Your Rights" Housing Court Community Forum in the Bronx. The forum included a presentation by a panel of housing experts: CASA/New Settlement, Housing Court Answers and the Urban Justice Center. These experts informed constituents on how to manage housing court issues. The Legal Aid Society also participated in the event, providing free legal advice to constituents. Attendees engaged in at Q&A session at the end of the event.
(Albany, NY)- Senator Serrano met with local youth groups representing Harlem RBI and Goddard Riverside programs, who traveled to Albany for Youth Action Day. These groups met with Serrano to advocate for much needed funding for the Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP).
(Albany, NY)- Senator Serrano joined advocates from the Family Planning Advocates for their Annual Day of Action. Nearly 500 women's health care advocates gathered in Albany to advocate for women's issues, including the passage of the full ten point Women's Equality Agenda which is designed to ensure equal pay, alleviate sexual harassment in the workplace, end family status discrimination and protect a woman's right to choose.
