(Bronx, NY) – Senator José M. Serrano joined elected officials and community advocates for the BronxWorks renaming ceremony of their Grand Concourse community center. The facility, now named Carolyn McLaughlin Community Center, was renamed in honor of their former Executive Director 's 34 years of long-standing service. Senator Serrano applauded BronxWorks for the important work that it does for the local community.

(City Hall, NY) – Senator José M. Serrano stood with advocates & colleagues on the steps of City Hall in support of Assemblymember Linda B. Rosenthal’s bill (S3753-A/A740A) which would help regulate cruel & tortuous puppy mills. Senator Serrano maintained that puppy mills, which have a history of breeding dogs under horrendous & deplorable conditions, cause a whole host of medical problems down the road for the defenseless animals and their unsuspecting owners.

Senator Serrano Volunteers at Joyce Kilmer Park in the Bronx for "It’s My Park Day"

(Bronx, NY) - For the sixth consecutive year, Senator José M. Serrano participated in "It's My Park Day," at Joyce Kilmer Park in the Bronx. "It's My Park Day" is a joint program hosted by City Parks Foundation and the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation. This fall, the Senator and his family joined local volunteers and environmental activists where they picked up garbage, dug soil, and planted bulbs.

Senator Serrano Joins Council Member Melissa Mark-Viverito for Rafael Tufiño Way Street Renaming Ceremony

(East Harlem, NY)  - Senator José M. Serrano joined Council Member Melissa Mark-Viverito and local community members on East 103rd Street and  Lexington Avenue for a street renaming ceremony in honor of great Puerto Rican painter, Rafaelo Tufiño. The stretch of East 103rd Street, between Park and Third Avenues, in Manhattan will be renamed as "Rafael Tufiño Way." During the ceremony, Senator Serrano spoke on the importance of maintaining the cultural history of New York City.

Statement from Senator Serrano on the Passing of Reverend John Grange

(Bronx, NY) - State Senator José M. Serrano expressed his heartfelt sadness on the passing of beloved South Bronx priest, Reverend John Grange.  Fr. Grange was a pioneer in the South Bronx during the tough times of the 1970's, reaching out to and welcoming a growing Latino and immigrant population. Fr. Grange was ordained in the Catholic Church in 1966, and from then he became universally known as a tireless leader serving the people of the South Bronx, where he was born and raised.  
Fr. Grange was a fearless defender of his community, often organizing community rallies in support of social justice issues while promoting local empowerment and community engagement.

(Bronx, NY) - Senator José M. Serrano spoke to students at Paul Robeson M.S. 203 about his career as an elected official. The program offered presentations on the importance of leadership, preparation, and the skills necessary to succeed in today's academic setting. Senator Serrano was a part of the program to offer some key words of advice on issues involving civics.

Serrano Achieves Highest Senate Score on Environmental Advocates Scorecard

(Albany, NY) State Senator José M. Serrano (D-Manhattan/Bronx), along with 10 of his colleagues from the Senate Democratic conference, were ranked highest amongst State Senators on the annual EPL/Environmental Advocates Scorecard. The scorecard tracks legislators' votes on bills affecting New York's environment. According to this year's rankings, 11 senators, including Serrano, voted correctly on all environmental bills that came up for a vote in the Senate Chamber.

Senator Serrano Joins Senator Liz Krueger in an Important Community Forum to Discuss new Federal Health Care Laws

(New York, NY) - State Senator José M. Serrano co-sponsored State Senator Liz Kruger's  “New York State of Health: What You Need to Know About Health Care Reform,” a community forum designed to inform constituents about the new Affordable Care Act. With open enrollment having officially started on October 1, 2013, individuals, families and small business owners are now able to enroll in new, affordable health insurance plans through the marketplace. The community forum served to make individuals aware of their options and learn what the new laws mean for New Yorkers.
