Senator Serrano today attended "It's My Park Day" at Franz Sigel Park in the Bronx!  This event was sponsored by William Casari and Partnerships for Parks. Partnerships for Parks is a joint program of City Parks Foundation and the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation. “It’s My Park Day” is celebrated by thousands of New Yorkers who volunteer to help beautify their local parks by painting, planting bulbs, and providing general clean-up among other ways.

Senator Serrano Attends the 3rd Annual Dunk the Junk Nutrition Fair

Senator Serrano today attended the Dunk the Junk Nutrition Fair in East Harlem sponsored by NewYork-Presbyterian Ambulatory Care Network. The fair offered free health screenings for blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar. Health Insurance Representatives were also present to answer questions. The event featured music, games, prizes, giveaways, and cooking lessons.

Senator Serrano Sponsors Free Identity Theft Workshop in the Bronx

Senator Serrano and the Office of Bronx District Attorney Robert Johnson today sponsored a Free Identity Theft Workshop in the Bronx at Hope of Israel Senior Center. The workshop featured a presentation by Assistant District Attorney Daniel Klein on strategies criminals are using to steal identities and ways to avoid becoming a victim.

Statement from Senator José M. Serrano Re: Activation of Secure Communities

"I am extremely troubled with the federal government's decision to move forward with the flawed Secure Communities program- a program in which the State of New York clearly stated it did not wish to participate."

"Nearly a year ago, I led a sign-on letter to which fifty of my colleagues in the legislature signed on, urging Governor Cuomo to terminate the S-Comm memorandum of agreement with ICE. In June, the Governor took a critical step to protect our state by choosing to withdraw New York's participation in a program that will lead to racial profiling and the under reporting of crimes, and which places an additional burden on our already stretched local police departments.

The State Senate Declares May as Lupus Awareness Month

(Albany, NY)- Yesterday the New York State Senate unanimously passed a Resolution proclaiming May 2011 as Lupus Awareness Month in the State of New York. The Senate Resolution was sponsored by Senator Joseph A. Griffo and co-sponsored by Senator Jose M. Serrano. The Resolution also passed the New York State Assembly where it was sponsored by Assemblywoman Vanessa Gibson.Lupus is a chronic disease that affects the immune system, causing it to become hyperactive and attack normal tissue. Of those affected with the illness, roughly 90 percent are women. Lupus is most prevalent among African Americans, Hispanics, Native Americans and Asians.

Senator Serrano Meets with the Empire State Pride Agenda to Discuss GENDA

Senator Serrano met with the Empire State Pride Agenda today in Albany to discuss The Gender Expression Non-Discrimination Act (GENDA/S.6349) which prohibits discrimination against transgender New Yorkers when it comes to housing, employment, credit, and public accommodations, while expanding New York's hate crimes law to include crimes against transgender individuals. The group expressed their support for the legislation, in particular the need to prevent hate crimes against the transgender community.

Senator Serrano Speaks at the HELP/PSI 2012 Graduation and Celebration of Accomplishments Ceremony

(New York, NY)- Senator Serrano was invited to speak at the HELP/PSI 2012 Graduation and Celebration of Accomplishments Ceremony. The ceremony, which had approximately 500 attendees, was held at the Holiday Inn in Manhattan. HELP/PSI's health care facilities provide comprehensive medical, mental health, social work, and substance abuse treatment services to people living with AIDS. The annual HELP/PSI graduation and induction of honorees celebrates those who have completed the programs that all of the treatment facilities provide.

Manhattan College: "Three Senators"

Senator Serrano served as guest speaker for the Manhattan College Latino Alumni Club’s (MCLAC) “Three Senators” event. The event, which took place on the Hayden Hall campus of Manhattan College, also featured Senators Gustavo Rivera and Adriano Espaillat for a panel discussion on the new dynamics in Albany under Governor Andrew Cuomo’s administration and other relevant issues affecting our community.

GOVERNOR CUOMO ANNOUNCES NY WORKS PROJECTS TO UPGRADE STATE PARKS IN NEW YORK CITY

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today announced a $9.7 million investment for NY Works projects to upgrade and repair two parks in New York City.New York Works is designed to reinvent state economic development with innovative new strategy that will put New Yorkers back to work rebuilding the state's infrastructure. The Task Force will help create tens of thousands of jobs by coordinating comprehensive capital plans, overseeing investment in infrastructure projects, and accelerating hundreds of critical projects across the state.

Serrano Sponsors Emergency Preparedness Workshop on Roosevelt Island

(Roosevelt Island, NY)- Senator José M. Serrano and the American Red Cross in Greater New York sponsored an Emergency Preparedness Workshop on Roosevelt Island today. This event was co-sponsored by Council Member Jessica Lappin and Assembly Member Micah Kellner and was attended by local community residents. The American Red Cross provided attendees with a free interactive CD that can be utilized to create a customized evacuation plan and other tools that will help any family get prepared in case of an emergency. Attendees learned how to create a family disaster plan, build and maintain a supply kit (To Go Bag), and keep loved ones safe and informed during times of disaster.

Immigrant's Day of Action in Albany

(Albany, NY)- Senator Serrano met with the New York Immigration Coalition (NYIC) and Little Sisters of Assumption from East Harlem for the Immigrants’ Day of Action in Albany.  These groups discussed the need for all immigrants to have access to higher education by passing the NY Dream Act that would provide financial aid services.   “The Dream Act is the opportunity for all immigrants to receive a college degree,” said Senator Serrano. “We need to support what is necessary for ambitious youths to excel in our society and boost our communities.  This legislation is a wise investment for New York and I fully support all the efforts of NYIC and Little Sisters of Assumption from East Harlem to ensure all immigrants have access to the American Dream.”

"Today I had the privilege of joining Senator Hugh Farley, Chair of the Senate Select Committee on Libraries, for a Roundtable on the funding of Public Libraries in New York State. Although the Governor's proposed budget slated a 4 percent increase for education, libraries are not included in that increase, despite being extremely important educational facilities on which the people of New York depend.

Black History Month Celebration in East Harlem

Councilmember Melissa Mark-Viverito and Senator Jose M. Serrano honored two local leaders from the East Harlem community for Black History Month.  This year’s honorees were Dr. Sean P. Gardner, Jr., Senior Pastor/Chief Executive Officer of East Ward  Missionary Baptist Church and John Ruiz, District Leader of the 68th Assembly District, Retired NYC Firefighter, and Founder of the Fireman Fire Safety School Program.
