(Albany, NY) The State Senate Democratic Majority has passed legislation sponsored by State Senator Jose Peralta (D-Queens), Chair of the Consumer Protection Committee, requiring retailers to sanitize every used mattress or bedding material transported, stored or sold in the state. The bill addresses the growing concerns regarding infestations of bedbugs by focusing on retail practices and the co-mingling of new and used bedding during transportation and storage.

Paterson’s Bedbug Veto - A Nuisance to New Yorkers

Yesterday, Governor Paterson vetoed a measure the Legislature passed to combat the bedbug infestation in New York State. The bill would have required all used bedding to be sanitized before being transported, stored or sold with new bedding. The bill would have also required annual inspections of bedding retailers, rather than the current random process. Paterson said the bill would cost the state an additional $600,000 and the hiring of eight employees.

Teaching Community About Alzheimer’s

In honor of Alzheimer’s Awareness Day and Hispanic Heritage Month, State Senator José Peralta and Alzheimer’s Association’s NYC Chapter sponsored a forum in Jackson Heights to educate residents about the disease.

More than 50 people attended the forum, which was held in English and Spanish, to discuss the disease, symptoms and treatments.

State Senator Peralta Brings Bright Smiles, Bright Futures To Jackson Heighta

State Senator Jose Peralta today helped bring Bright Smiles to the faces of children in Jackson Heights. 

One of the vans in the Colgate Bright Smiles, Bright Futures program fleet, staffed by volunteer dentists from the Queens County Dental Society, provided free dental screenings and education to children at The Renaissance Charter School. 

The Colgate Bright Smiles, Bright Futures program works to increase oral health literacy and promote good oral care habits. The program each year reaches 50 million children and their families across 80 countries with education and dental screenings.
