State Senate Passes Peralta’s “Chicas Card” Bill

State Senator Jose R. Peralta’s bill targeting the distribution of pimps’ business cards along a stretch of more than 40 blocks of Roosevelt Avenue was passed by the Senate this afternoon. Senator Peralta introduced the bill in response to parental outrage and community frustration with the thriving local sex trade. The cards, featuring pictures of naked and minimally clad women and phone numbers to call for “free delivery” littered sidewalks on Roosevelt Avenue and adjacent streets. If the bill is approved by the Assembly either today or Monday, as expected, it will move to Governor Andrew Cuomo's desk to be signed into law.

Senator Peralta Calls For Extending State Foreclosure Prevention Program

Arguing that “investing in foreclosure prevention saves money,” State Senator Jose Peralta is urging Governor Andrew Cuomo to continue funding a program that provides homeowners with counseling, legal assistance and help negotiating with banks.

In a letter to the governor citing alarmingly high rates of seriously delinquent mortgages in his senate district, Senator Peralta calls for extending the state’s Foreclosure Prevention Services Program.  Launched in 2008, funding for the $25 million initiative expires at the end of the year.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed a bill into law last week banning the distribution of cards depicting naked or scantily clad women used to promote prostitution. The bill was sponsored by state Sen. Jose Peralta (D-East Elmhurst) and state Assemblyman Francisco Moya (D-Jackson Heights) in response to the proliferation of such cards along Roosevelt Avenue. “This is an important first step in what needs to become an all-out offensive against the prostitution problem and other quality-of-life issues that have long plagued Roosevelt Avenue,” Peralta said in a statement.

Senator Peralta introduced the bill in response to parental outrage and community frustration with the thriving local sex trade.  The cards, featuring pictures of naked and minimally clad women and phone numbers to call for “free delivery,” have for years littered sidewalks on Roosevelt Avenue and adjacent streets.

Sen. Jose Peralta Urges NYS Senate Republicans To Act Like Rick Perry--On DREAM Act

As reported by New York Daily News:

Sen. Jose Peralta, a Democrat and prime sponsor of a bill to create a state DREAM Act, invoked conservative Texas Gov. Rick Perry in urging his Republican colleagues to support the measure.

"We have an opportunity here in New York to build on the growing national consensus, among business, labor and Republican and Democratic leaders, on both the need for immigration reform and the obvious economic benefits of reform.”

The Peralta DREAM Act bill would allow allow state financial assistance to go to the college kids of illegal immigrants.

Perry signed a different version of the DREAM Act that allows the kids of undocumented immigrants to pay in-state tuition at Texas state colleges.
