FLRBA Send-off Breakfast

I had the pleasure of taking part in the annual Finger Lakes Regional Burn Association Youth Burn Camp Send-off Breakfast yesterday morning. These resilient children will take part in Camp Courage, a four day retreat for youth burn victims. This camp gives them a chance to participate in a wide array of activities that encourage creating a new and positive self-image. Special thanks to the Rochester Fire Department for hosting the send-off breakfast.

2nd Annual Wounded Warriors Benefit Concert

I was honored to attend the 2nd annual Wounded Warriors Benefit Concert was held at Greece Post 468 this past weekend. Post 468 did an incredible job planning this great event once again. 100% of the proceeds from this event went to the NY Warrior Alliance.

To this year's honorees, Cody Coopenberg, Danny Fittos and Christopher Velez - we humbly thank you for your service to our great nation, and for putting the lives of others above your own.

Reading to Horizons Summer Program

I had a great time reading to Kindergarteners at the Horizons Summer Program at the Harley School for their annual Community Reading Day and Book Fair. This six week program focuses on math, reading and writing, and serves under-privileged youth from the City of Rochester.

New SUNY College of Nanoscale Science & Engineering Facility

Today, I had the privilege of joining Lt. Governor Duffy and other local leaders in announcing that the SUNY College of Nanoscale Science & Engineering will be opening a solar manufacturing and technology development facility in the Town of Greece. SUNY CSNE will invest $100 million in to this one-of-a-kind project by transforming an empty 57,000 square foot facility, formerly used by Kodak, and will create 100 jobs for our community.

Rochester Regional Community Design Center Fund Program

Earlier this week, I joined Joni Monroe, Executive Director of the Rochester Regional Community Design Center, to announce the first two grant recipients of their development & design fund program. This program provides grants to non-profits seeking to implement physical improvement projects in the City's northeast neighborhoods, and is funded by the generous Farash and Wolk Foundations.

Congratulations to the Dazzle School of Visual & Performing Arts, which is relocating to a building on Webster Avenue, and the Joseph Avenue Business Association, which is opening the Joseph Avenue Museum of History & Religion at 692 Joseph Avenue.

Last night, I had the pleasure of welcoming participants of this year's City of Rochester and RochesterWorks summer employment program. I'm pleased to say that I've helped secure funding for this program the past few years; with the support of Mayor Richards and the City of Rochester, we're able to help over 400 youth gain summer employment and learn valuable skills for their future.

Town of Gates 200th Birthday Celebration

This past weekend, the Town of Gates celebrated its 200th Birthday with a bang! It started with a parade from Gates Town Hall to Gates-Chili High School. The celebration continued with performances by the Jig's Up String Band, Keys to the Caddy and the infamous Lou Gramm Band. 

The Town of Gates was incorporated on April 1, 1813, making it one of the oldest towns in Monroe County.

11th Annual Rochester Juneteenth Celebration

Last weekend, I joined 1,000 fellow Rochester residents at Susan B. Anthony Square to celebrate the 11th annual local Juneteenth Celebration. Juneteenth is the celebration of the end of slavery in the United States. The Emancipation Proclamation went into effect on Jan. 1, 1863, but it wasn’t until June 19, 1865, that slaves in Galveston, Texas, got word that the Civil War had ended and all the enslaved were free.

Today, I had the opportunity to join hundreds of participants and their families at the 2013 Monroe County Special Olympics Track and Field Games at Lebeau Field at Hilton High School. I would like to thank Hilton Central School District for hosting the event. A special thank you to those who have been involved in making this year's Special Olympics such a huge success!
