AT&T recently donated $30,000 the Villa of Hope to support the Villa's Juvenile Reporting Center program. This generous donation brought together two great organizations, AT&T and the Villa of Hope! Thanks to both for all that they do for our community.
I hosted a public forum on heroin and opioid addiction with my colleagues in the State Legislature Senator Phil Boyle and Assemblyman Mark Johns. We heard compelling testimony from drug addiction and prevention experts, law enforcement professionals and families who have been touched by addiction. We are committed to ending this growing problem that has taken countless lives across New York State. My sincere thanks to everyone who shared their stories and to those who attended today.
I recently joined members of the Rochester Hispanic Youth Baseball League to announce their plans for the 2014 International Games. This two day tournament will feature teams from Rochester, Cleveland, New York City, Puerto Rico and Dominican Republic. I was pleased to join Greece Town Supervisor Bill Reilich this morning to announce the Town's plans for its revived 4th of July celebration! The day will kickoff with a Freedom 5k, will include food vendors, games and activities, and will be headlined by a performance from the band Orleans and fireworks, all at the Greece Town Campus. If I wasn't ready for summer yet, I certainly am now!
The Rochester Institute of Technology recently broke ground on its new Clinical Health Sciences Center that will help to expand the College of Health Sciences and Technology. I was pleased to be on hand for this exciting event. This new facility will not only house the College of Health Sciences and Technology, it will also be home to a primary care clinic that will be run by Rochester General Hospital, as well as the newly announced Wegmans School of Health and Nutrition. This is such an exciting time for R.I.T., I'm honored to be a part of it!
I had a great time visiting Rochester Childfirst Network and reading "Goodnight Moon" to a group of their students this afternoon. For the fourth consecutive year, my colleagues in the New York State Legislature and I approved an on-time budget that reduces taxes and keeps overall spending growth below two percent. I was pleased to join Governor Cuomo in Rochester this morning to highlight the successes of this year's budget.
The Rochester Ice Cats held their 7th annual Rochester Friendship Tournament over the weekend. I was excited that they asked me to once again help welcome all of the athletes and help drop the puck at the Opening Ceremony Saturday afternoon. I had the privilege of joining the Rochester community in welcoming home Honor Flight Mission 33 yesterday afternoon. Welcoming home our veterans from an Honor Flight mission never gets old to me, as we give them the proper "thanks" for all that they have done for our nation. Many thanks to all of the volunteers, guardians and donor who make Honor Flight Rochester possible.
I was pleased to join my colleagues in state and local government for the Monroe County/City of Rochester Coalition for Crime Victims press conference for Crime Victims Awareness week. The Coalition for Crime Victims has made tremendous progress throughout its 30 years of serving. I pledge to continue advocating for crime victims throughout our region and our state. I was pleased to present newly appointed President Kirk Simpson with an official proclamation from the New York State Senate. I was pleased to host students from my Alma Mater, SUNY Brockport, this afternoon to discuss the 2014 State Budget and education funding. These students were knowledgeable and came prepared with great questions. Students like them remind me why I'm so proud to be a SUNY Brockport alum! Go Golden Eagles!
I had the pleasure of meeting with Boy Scouts Luke Basler, Graham Trolley, Marshall Ireland and Nash Dickason from Boy Scout Troop 77 in Brighton. They had some great questions for me about my job in the State Senate and the inner-workings of State Government, and were able to receive a Merit Badge for it! Great job guys, keep up the good work and dedication to scouting!
I had a great meeting with dozens of local and state Highway Superintendents yesterday afternoon in Albany. These hard working men and women are dedicated to providing the best roads and highways for New York State travelers. I look forward to working with them more in my role as Senate Transportation Committee Chairman. Thanks for making the trip to Albany!

Chelsy's offers Spanish and American cuisine, and is open from 6:00 a.m. - 9:00 p.m. 7 days a week! The Navedo's put a lot of sweat and equity in to making this a great restaurant for all to enjoy. I was pleased to join officials from the City of Rochester and New York State yesterday as we cut the ribbon on Providence Housing's latest development, Son House Apartments on Joseph Avenue. Son House Apartments offer 21 affordable one-bedroom apartments with nearby access to the RGRTA bus line and retail shopping.
As part of an ongoing initiative, students at Autumn Lane Elementary School in the Town of Greece will now have access to 30 iPads in the school's library. This new technology will help them prepare for testing and to meet district technology standards. I'm pleased to help secure funding for this project that will benefit all K-5 students in the Greece Central School District by providing them access to new technology.
