University of Rochester Breaks Ground on College Town

Earlier today, I had the privilege to attend the groundbreaking ceremony for the University of Rochester's College Town. College Town will be located on the corner of Mt. Hope and Elmwood, and will offer 500,000 square feet for retail, a hotel, a parking garage with 1,500 spaces, restaurants, and housing on a 14-acre development. The project received a $4 million grant from the Finger Lakes Regional Economic Development Council.

Town of Gates Earth Week Celebration

On Saturday morning, the Town of Gates held its Earth Week Dedication Ceremony at Lions Park. This year, a tree was planted and dedicated to the Citizens of the Town of Gates from 1813 through 2013. The town is celebrating it's Bicentennial this year.

ESL Building Newest Habitat for Humanity Home

Last week, I had the privilege to attend a ground breaking ceremony for the newest Habitat for Humanity House. This house will be built by, and sponsored by, ESL. bout 400 ESL employees will volunteer 3,200 hours on the home's construction, which is expected to take 11 weeks. The house is located in Rochester's JOSANA neighborhood.

Recently, I had the privilege to join 3rd and 4th graders at ABC Head Start in Rochester to celebrate Clifford the Dog's 50th Birthday! In addition to a birthday cake, and a bulletin-board size card for the children to sign, there was also a book fair to celebrate the big occasion!

Senator Robach Secures Funding for City of Rochester's Summer of Opportunity Program

(Thursday, April 25, 2013) - Mayor Thomas S. Richards announced today that the City's Summer of Opportunity (SOOP) work and career exploration program for city youth will expand its scope due to the efforts of State Senator Joe Robach.

 

"Senator Robach has secured almost half of the funding for this program, which means more than 400 city high school students will have an opportunity to spend their summers in meaningful jobs or exploring modern career alternatives," said Mayor Richards. "The Senator's commitment to Rochester's future is well known, and he has demonstrated it yet again with this grant. The people of Rochester are truly fortunate to have such an effective advocate in Albany."

Yesterday, I had the privilege to attend a press conference to discuss details of National Crime Victims Rights Week, which will take place next week across the country. Naiades Oncology Rowing Launches 'Spirit'

On Saturday, I had the privilege to speak at a ceremony hosted by Naiades Oncology Rowing to launch their newest boat. The group is a rowing organization started to help women who have staged the courageous and tough fight against cancer, or who are currently undergoing treatment and are fighting the terrible disease. Sustainability Institute Hall Dedication at R.I.T.

The 84,000-square-foot “living lab” represents RIT’s commitment to the environment through research and academic programs. GIS plans to host an open house for the RIT community later this spring. The building will also be showcased during Imagine RIT: Innovation and Creativity Festival on Saturday, May 4.

Rochester Credit Unions Award Scholarships

Last night, I had the privilege to present a proclamation to Melis Schildkraut of Brighton. She was awarded a scholarship by The Credit Union Association of New York's Rochester Credit Unions. The Rochester Chapter Scholarship Awards Program, solely funded by the annual Rochester Chapter Scholarship Golf Tournament, awards scholarships annually to High School seniors who are members of participating Rochester area Credit Unions. Scholarship applications are distributed to participating Credit Unions in November each year with entries being due in late January. Applicants are judged on their academic and essay writing skills, as well as their extra-curricular activities by a panel of volunteer judges.

Susan Swanton Named Gates Lions Club Citizen of the Year

Last night, I had the privilege to speak at a ceremony to honor Sue Swanton as the Gates Lions Club Outstanding Citizen of the Year. I presented her with a proclamation to commend her for all that she has done for our community. She was the Director of Gates Public Library for almost 40 years, and serves in a number of volunteer roles to better the community in which she lives. Congratulations to Sue for this honor!
