Rochester, NY - On Thursday, April 26th, the New York State Senate celebrated West Point Day. This annual celebration is held to honor all of those brave men and women who have served, and continue to serve our Country, both at home, and overseas. Thank you to all of our servicemen and women for their dedication and courage. Here I am pictured with retired Lieutenant Colonel Bill Larkin, who served 23 years on active duty in the United States Army, and is now my colleague in the Senate.
Yesterday, I had the privilege and honor to take part in Memorial Day celebrations around our community. It was great to see so many familiar faces around Gates, Hilton, Greece, Charlotte, and Rochester. Thank you to all the brave men and women for your sacrifice and service to our Country.
The New York State Senate today passed a bill (S.490), sponsored by Senator Joe Robach, that waives the 24-hour waiting period for military members to get married after receiving a marriage license. This would apply to military members who are scheduled for deployment in less than 30 days. “Given the sacrifice, coupled with the unique circumstances of active veterans, we feel this bill will better accommodate the requests of some of our brave men and women in the military with their personal and family lives,” said Senator Robach. “This is one small favor we can do to accommodate their time frame.”
On Sunday, October 21st, I had the privilege to welcome home World War II veterans at the Greater Rochester International Airport from their Honor Flight. Honor Flight flies veterans to the World War II memorial in Washington, D.C. This was the 26th such trip. On Thursday night, I had the honor to speak at, and talk with students, faculty, staff, their families, and local veterans at the annual Veterans Day ceremony. This was the 26th year for the ceremony. The students, faculty, and staff did a wonderful job as always on this great annual event to honor those who have served our Country.
On Sunday, April 21st, I had the privilege to welcome back veterans from our area who were a part of Honor Flight Rochester Mission 27. On Wednesday, April 24th, the New York State Senate held its annual West Point Day to celebrate the Class of 2013 at West Point Academy. Senator Robach joined Senator Bill Larkin Jr. to discuss the importance of this annual celebration.
I was honored to join Assemblyman Bill Reilich and members of our community this afternoon at the dedication of the Brian K. Schramm Post Office Building in the Town of Greece. Brian was a lifelong Greece resident and graduate of Greece Olympia High School. Upon high school graduation, Brian enlisted in the United State Marine Corps to serve our great nation. Brian was tragically taken from us on October 15, 2004 while serving his second tour of duty in Iraq.
This post office building will remind us of the sacrifice Brian made for our country, and we are forever grateful for his dedication and service to our nation.
I was honored to join my colleagues in government and residents from the Town of Gates at the annual Memorial Day ceremony at Gates Town Hall. This was a wonderful community ceremony that paid tribute to our nation's veterans, active troops and those who died in combat. Thanks to all who took time out of their day to honor our nation's heroes.
