Rochester, NY - On Thursday, April 26th, the New York State Senate celebrated West Point Day. This annual celebration is held to honor all of those brave men and women who have served, and continue to serve our Country, both at home, and overseas. Thank you to all of our servicemen and women for their dedication and courage. Here I am pictured with retired Lieutenant Colonel Bill Larkin, who served 23 years on active duty in the United States Army, and is now my colleague in the Senate.
On Wednesday, May 23rd, I had the privilege to honor the Fedele family as recipients of the 2012 New York State Veterans Hall of Fame. It was a privilege to nominate this well-deserving family for their courage, bravery, and sacrifice for our Country. Thank you to the Fedele family and to all of those who have serve, and continue to serve for our Country.
The Fedele family, like millions of other American families, responded to their country’s needs during World War II. Except that, unlike every other family, the Fedeles sent eight brothers off to war. This was the record for the most men from one family to serve in a foreign war at the same time.
Yesterday, I had the privilege and honor to take part in Memorial Day celebrations around our community. It was great to see so many familiar faces around Gates, Hilton, Greece, Charlotte, and Rochester. Thank you to all the brave men and women for your sacrifice and service to our Country.
Earlier this morning, I had the privilege to speak at the dedication ceremony at the Twelve Corners Memorial Stone in Brighton. Herb Ross, who was a vital part of the Brighton community for so many years, received the honor of having his name added to the memorial stone. I had the pleasure of working with Herb throughout the years, both on my staff and in other capacities. Herb passed away earlier this year. He was a Korean War Army veteran who also served afterward in the Army Reserve, attaining the rank of major. He volunteered for six decades at Temple B’rith Kodesh and twice served as president of the Brighton Chamber of Commerce. Herb also worked for a long time at Daw Drug Co., then as an insurance agent. I am pictured with my daughter and members of Herb's family.
Last night, I had the privilege to attend a reception to welcome the new president and CEO of Veterans Outreach Center, Col. Gary Yaple. Veterans Outreach Center is an independent community-centered non-profit providing premier one-stop supportive services to veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces and their families. (Rochester, NY) - Last Thursday, I had the privilege to speak at the ceremony to honor Greece Central School Distirct graduates. Diplomas were given for students who completed the General Education Development (GED) program through adult literacy and the Bridges program and high school students. 83-year old Jerry Oransky received the New York State Operation Recognition award. Through this program, veterans can earn their high school diploma if they left school without graduating.
On Sunday, October 21st, I had the privilege to welcome home World War II veterans at the Greater Rochester International Airport from their Honor Flight. Honor Flight flies veterans to the World War II memorial in Washington, D.C. This was the 26th such trip. On Wednesday night, I had the privilege to attend, and speak at, the annual St. Lawrence School Veterans Day concert. Students from grades 4-6 took part in the concert to honor our country and those who have served it. Great job by all the students!
On Thursday night, I had the honor to speak at, and talk with students, faculty, staff, their families, and local veterans at the annual Veterans Day ceremony. This was the 26th year for the ceremony. The students, faculty, and staff did a wonderful job as always on this great annual event to honor those who have served our Country.
Throughout this past weekend, I had the honor and privilege to be a part of many great events around our community to honor all of our veterans as a part of Veterans Day weekend.
