Honor Flight Wraps up 2012 Season

On Sunday, October 21st, I had the privilege to welcome home World War II veterans at the Greater Rochester International Airport from their Honor Flight. Honor Flight flies veterans to the World War II memorial in Washington, D.C. This was the 26th such trip. R.I.T. College of Applied Science & Technology Celebrates 40 Years

Earlier this afternoon, I was privileged to join my colleagues from New York State, and the faculty, staff, students, and alumni of the College of Applied Science and Technology at R.I.T. for their 40th Anniversary Celebration. The College of Applied Science and Technology (CAST) at RIT has a long-standing reputation of excellence and innovation. Established in 1972, it is one of the Institute’s largest colleges enrolling approximately one-fifth of all the students at RIT. The college offers a myriad of dynamic programs—ranging from hospitality, nutrition and service management, health systems administration, human resource development, packaging science, environmental management and safety, engineering technology, and the Army and Air Force ROTC.

This past weekend, I had the privilege to take part in the ribbon-cutting ceremony at Pinnacle Liqour in Brighton. Pinnacle Liquor is located at 1720 Monroe Avenue. Greece Chamber of Commerce Business Showcase

On Saturday afternoon, I had the privilege to visit with guests at the Greece Chamber of Commerce Business Showcase. The showcase, which took place at The Mall at Greece Ridge, featured small business owners from Greece. Some of the businesses on hand included: Affinity Orchard Place Apartments; Benefit Representatives of America; BrunoComp Insurance Agency; Bryant & Stratton College; Genesee Regional Bank; PetSaver Healthy Pet Superstore; Ridge Road Fire District; and Wehner Mower.

Push Yourself 5k Aids Local Causes

On Sunday morning, I had the privilege to visit with participants at the Push Yourself 5k at Ellison Park. This was the third year of the event, which was held to benefit the Rochester Area CrimeStoppers and the Lymphoma/Leukemia Society. Rochester homicide victim Paul Vasconcellos II was remembered during the 5k. He was killed two years ago, and his case remains unsolved. His father Paul Vasconcellos Sr. was on hand for the event. Also, funds were raised for Dan Prinzi, a teacher in Webster, who was diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma. Nearly 500 runners took place in the Push Yourself 5k. Latino Student College Fair

On Friday morning, I had the privilege to speak at the 2nd Annual Latino Student College Fair, which was held at City Hall. The fair offered students from the City of Rochester School District to meet with officials from local colleges and business organizations. 2012 Human Service Worker of the Year Awards

Earlier this afternoon, I had the privilege to present the 2012 Human Service Courage Award to City of Rochester Police Officer Anthony DiPonzio. I also had the honor of nominating Anthony for the award for his dedication to our community and his amazing recovery and return to work after being shot in the line of duty in 2009. Congratulations to all of this year's award winners!

Visiting Discovery Charter School

This is a new elementary public school located at the campus of Bishop Kearney High School. Currently, it has grades K through 2nd and will be adding 3rd through 6th grade. Germanow-Simon Expands

On Friday, I had the privilege to attend a ceremony at Germanow-Simon Corp. to celebrate the completion of a $3.25 million upgrade to the company's facilities located at 408 St. Paul Street. Germanow-Simon Corp. consists of two operating companies: GS Plastics Optics and Tel-Tru Manufacturing Co., and is one of the area's oldest continually operating manufacturing businesses. It was founded 96 years ago by members of the Germanow and Simon families. It currently employs 93 people, and when the project began 18 months ago, it employed 77 people.
