Senate Passes Griffo's Co-Sponsored NY-SAFE Act Reforms

ALBANY – The State Senate on Monday passed legislation co-sponsored by Sen. Joseph Griffo that would repeal certain aspects of the so-called NY SAFE Act.

Sen. Griffo has always shared a strong belief with many constituents across his district in Oneida, Lewis and St. Lawrence counties that the Governor’s SAFE Act is a flawed and overreaching policy that was rushed into implementation in 2013 without any input from law-abiding gun owners. The law was tasked with certain authorities without knowing relevant facts at the time, and therefore Sen. Griffo believes the Senate’s vote to revise the SAFE Act is a step toward addressing some of the most egregious provisions.

Griffo Comment on Assembly Power Sharing Proposal

Sheldon Silver needs to step down from his post as Assembly speaker. This cockamamie idea where five people are going to take turns negotiating on behalf of their conference is going to severely undermine the effectiveness of the budget process. It’s too important to the people of New York that we deliver an on-time budget.

This proposed power sharing is never going to work. Here’s why: In negotiations, compromises are inevitably made. It’s a give-and-take, in which one area of the budget sustains a cut so another can receive funding. How in the world are we going to make progress if five people need to negotiate among themselves before they can negotiate with the governor and the Senate?

Governor Cuomo’s proposed budget respects the spending cap, while offering tax relief to property owners and incentives for businesses to expand and add jobs. I share these priorities, so it’s helpful the governor has started the negotiations off at this point.

My goal is to help deliver a fifth consecutive on-time budget – a plan that will help bring prosperity to the people of the Mohawk Valley and Northern New York.

I received the entirety of the governor’s plan and vision for the first time today. My colleagues and I will now begin a thorough review. As I work, I welcome the opportunity to discuss various ideas with my constituents.

Griffo Statement on Passing of Governor Mario Cuomo

"I got to know Mario during his last term as governor, which coincided with my first term as mayor of Rome. I was always impressed with his intellect, his love for the Empire State and his talent for delivering memorable speeches.

"Mario was a dedicated public servant with a seemingly unyielding work ethic. I remember him calling me when our city sustained damage during a storm. I returned his call late at night, and was surprised to hear Mario’s voice on the other end of the line. He was working.  When we had issues or challenges, the governor did his best to become interested and involved.
