Griffo announces $8.5 million for Rome

Empire State Development grant will extend water, sewer to residents, businesses

ROME – Sen. Joseph A. Griffo today announced that the state is providing $8.5 million to the City of Rome for a major water-sewer improvement project.

The funds, which come from Empire State Development’s Economic Transformation Program, are for a two-phase project in the north, west and south corridors of Rome.

Senator Griffo Comments on PSC Freezing National Grid Rates to Help Customers

The Public Service Commission today announced it authorized National Grid to take immediate action to provide its customers with a $32 million temporary credit to offset an unprecedented increase in electric supply costs. Griffo Calls on PSC to Investigate Heating Bills

UTICA – Senator Joseph A. Griffo has written a letter asking the Public Service Commission to uncover the true reason behind skyrocketing heat and electric bills.

“I’ve heard from several people about how bills doubled and tripled this winter – and it can’t be all explained by just using more of the utilities,” said Griffo. “We need to find out which entities are gouging customers and how they can be stopped.”

Some of the reasons for a cost increase are known, the senator said.

Griffo Announces $418,980 in Construction Grants For Libraries

ALBANY – Sen. Joseph A. Griffo today announced that public libraries in his district have been awarded a combined $418,980 for construction funds.

“Many of our public libraries are in desperate need of renovations and upgrades,” said Griffo, R-Rome. “We need to make libraries accessible and enjoyable for all, which means building better access for those who are disabled, installing heating and air conditioning for comfort and providing Internet and other electronic technology to aid in learning. I thank the New York State Library for granting these needed funds so that we can preserve our local libraries for decades to come.”

Griffo Calls for $4B Investment In Infrastructure, Schools, Tax Relief and Debt Relief

ALBANY – Senator Joseph A. Griffo today outlined how he believes the state should use its net $4.2 billion windfall from five financial settlements, as outlined in Monday’s state Division of Budget financial report (link opens PDF).

“In the context of a $142 billion spending plan, these settlements won’t pay for everything,” said Griffo, R-Rome. “It’s important to maintain perspective and prioritize. Creating new programs and funding pet projects may make some lawmakers look good, but it’s not a good use of a one-time revenue.”

Senator Griffo's Weekly Column #28: What To Do With An Extra $4.2 Billion

Recently, a French bank named BNP Paribas admitted laundering $190 billion through financial institutions in our state. The money was originating in Sudan and Iran, two countries blacklisted by ours for their support of terrorist organizations.

The bank is paying a huge fine - $8.9 billion – for its crimes. Our state is receiving $3.6 billion from the settlement. It’s one of five financial settlements that will, together, bring in $4.2 billion in unexpected revenue in the 2015 fiscal year.
