Rail Barrel Giveaway Pre-Registration

State Senator Joseph P. Addabbo Jr. and Assemblyman Mike Miller will host a rain barrel giveaway September 26 as part of an ongoing effort to help the community conserve water. The event is being held in partnership with the New York City Department of Environmental Protection.

Senator Addabbo, Assemblyman Miller and DEP officials will give out 55-gallon rain barrels designed to catch excess rain water that can later be used for things such as washing a car or watering plants. By using rain water for these tasks instead of water from a hose or another household device, residents can do their part to help make sure clean water is not being wasted, while saving money in the process.

Times Ledger: State Fully Funds Backlog of Requirements for Private Schools

The state Legislature passed a last-minute, end-of-session agreement to allocate $250 million to fund the costs of state mandates at secular, religious and independent schools throughout the state.

The measure was pushed through with the support of state Sen. Joseph Addabbo (D-Howard Beach), who said the chambers of the Legislature heard the concerns of several parents and religious leaders who described how the Compulsory Attendance Law is a financial drain on private institutions.

Queens Chronicle: Civic, Residents Stood Up By Agency

The Department of Design and Construction last Thursday canceled its appearance at the New Hamilton Beach Civic Association meeting hours before it was supposed to update residents on a capital project on James Court.

The project was first proposed when state Sen. Joe Addabbo Jr. (D-Howard Beach) was a councilman. He, too, expressed anger at the DDC not showing up to the meeting.

The Forum: State Houses Pass Bill Giving Vets Opportunity to Buy Pension Credit

The state Senate and Assembly have passed a bill that would provide all active state public employee veterans with the opportunity to purchase up to three years of pension credit prior to retirement—a benefit that is now only available to former members of the armed forces who served during certain specified conflicts, according to Sen. Joe Addabbo, Jr. (D-Howard Beach), a co-sponsor of the legislation.

The Forum: Senate Passes Addabbo Bill to Establish Incentives for Removing Cock Lofts

The ball is in the Assembly’s court as the Senate recently approved legislation that would provide incentives for the removal of cock lofts—small, often hazardous, enclosed spaces above the highest finished ceiling of a building that allow fires to spread to attached houses.

The bill, initially introduced by state Sen. Joe Addabbo, Jr. (D-Howard Beach) in 2013 in the wake of a raging five-alarm fire in Middle Village that damaged seven homes, injured 11 firefighters and may have been exacerbated by the existence of cock lofts in the structures.

Howard Beach, NY (June 30, 2015) “I believe that without federal officials altering the FEMA flood maps themselves, the city took a step in the right direction when it appealed the proposed flood maps. The planned FEMA maps could put many of my constituents in the objectionable position of paying exorbitant flood insurance premiums or making the complicated decision to elevate their home. I am hopeful that with either the city appeal, state or preferable federal action, my constituents may someday witness some relief from the stressful possibility of being in a flood zone.”

Queens, NY (June 29, 2015) NYS Senator Joseph P. Addabbo, Jr. recently joined with his Senate colleagues in approving legislation (S.5937) he co-sponsors to provide all active state public employee veterans with the opportunity to purchase up to three years of pension credit prior to retirement – a benefit that is now only available to former members of the armed forces who served during certain specified conflicts.
