SENATOR LAVALLE FIGHTS TO KEEP DRUNK DRIVERS OFF OUR STREETS -

Legislation Mandates Interlock Ignition Devices for DWI Offenders Senator Kenneth P. LaValle today announced that legislation he cosponsored to create a mandatory ignition interlock program for all persons convicted of driving while intoxicated (DWI) has passed the Senate. The measure would improve the current law by mandating a program that allows counties throughout the state to operate an ignition interlock program. “It seems the media is reporting horror stories about someone being killed or injured by a drunk driver on a daily basis,” said Senator LaValle.

Senator LaValle Says the New State Budget Hurts Small Business

Senator LaValle today announced that the new state budget imposes taxes and fees that will have a devastating impact on small businesses and cost New York thousands of jobs.  The state budget process was conducted behind closed doors by three Democrats from New York City, while the needs of people from Buffalo to Montauk were left unattended.

Senate Republicans Fight Against “Health Insurance Tax”

Senator Kenneth P. LaValle today announced that the Senate Democrats have rejected a Republican-sponsored amendment to roll back the ill-advised “Health Insurance Tax” that was approved as part of the “Deficit Reduction Package” (DRP).  The tax hike, which was passed as a result of unanimous Democrat support, will impose a $240 million increased assessment on insurance companies that will raise the cost of health insurance premiums for families, individuals, and businesses to unprecedented levels.

Senate Republicans Fight to Restore Cuts to Libraries and Non-Public Schools

April 1, 2009 

            Senator Kenneth P. LaValle announced that the Senate Republican Conference proposed an amendment to restore cuts to libraries and non-public schools advanced in the Governor’s budget.  The measure supported by the Conference aimed to restore the remaining $7.4 million of an $18 million cut to libraries, as well as $14 million of the $44 million cut to non-public schools.  However, the Senate Democrats voted along party lines to defeat the amendment.

Corrections Officer Test Offered

Senator Kenneth P. LaValle today announced that the New York State Department of Civil Service will offer a new Correction Officer examination on April 4, 2009. Applications must be postmarked no later than February 17, 2009. Candidates must be 21 years of age on or before the date of their appointment.
