Ribbon Cutting At Stony Brook Children's Hospital -- Ronald McDonald House Family Room

Stony Brook Children’s Hospital opened a Ronald McDonald Family Room Program to provide support for families of more than 7,000 children who are hospitalized each year at Suffolk County’s only children’s hospital. Located on the Pediatric Unit, the room will provide families with a place to relax with many of the comforts of home, including a kitchen, dining area, sitting area with flat-screen TV, showers and lockers, and laundry facilities. Ronald McDonald House of Long Island will also provide a van to transport families to airports, doctors’ appointments and drug stores.

Libraries Thank Senator LaValle for State Aid

Officials gathered in the new Children’s Addition of the East Hampton Library to publicly thank local legislators for their successful efforts on behalf of our local libraries (including the East Hampton Library, Sag Harbor’s John Jermain Memorial Library and the Shelter Island Public Library) to win substantial new grants from the New York State Public Library Construction Grants program.

Closing of More Than 30 Acres on the Carmans River

New York State Senator Kenneth P. LaValle (at podium), author of the historic Pine Barrens Preservation legislation that  assured the protection of environmentally sensitive lands for generations to come joined, from left, Brookhaven Town Supervisor Mark Lesko, Senator Lee Zeldin and Assemblyman Dean Murray at the July 15 Town of Brookhaven announcement of the acquisition of the Lake Grove School property. The parcel is sandwiched between two public land holdings: Southaven County Park to the west and a 23-acre Town-owned open space property to the east. The western boundary of the property is approximately 1,650 feet from the Carmans River.

LaValle Calls for PSC Oversight of LIPA

New York State Senator Kenneth P. LaValle, at left, addresses Michael Hervey, Chief Operating Officer, LIPA  about his recently passed bill (S2581) requiring the State’s Public Service Commission to approve any LIPA rate increases over 2.5%. Hervey argued against the bill which now must pass the Assembly and be signed by the Governor. The LIPA Hearing, held April 7 at Farmingdale State College was chaired by Senator George Maziarz, to the right of LaValle. Michael Hervey addresses the committee at right.

School Superintendent Forum

Senator LaValle was joined by Assemblymen Fred Thiele, Dan Losquadro and Senator Lee Zeldin at a forum with more than 25 school superintendents.

The group discussed the proposed Executive Budget as well as the two percent tax cap legislation and its impact on school districts.
