Senator Ken LaValle: “Public Assistance Integrity Act” to be voted on in Senate next week

Today, Senator Ken LaValle reported that the “Public Assistance Integrity Act” (Senate Bill S966) will come before the Senate for a vote next week.  The Act, which Senator LaValle sponsored, prohibits the use of public assistance for purchasing alcoholic beverages, tobacco or lottery tickets.  Additionally, the Legislation would prohibit withdrawal of public assistance monies at certain locations, specifically, liquor stores, casinos, and adult-oriented establishments.

Senator Ken LaValle Calls on State Education Commissioner to Delay “Common Core”

In the NY Senate Education Committee today, Senator Ken LaValle called upon Commissioner John King to delay “Common Core” implementation.  Senator LaValle said “Going back to the initial meeting on Long Island last April, it appears that the Department of Education is not listening.  The rollout of Common Core has been flawed, and children are being hurt.”

Senator Ken LaValle Reminds Constituents To Look For Unclaimed Funds

New York State is holding $12 Billion in unclaimed funds and Senator Ken LaValle wants Long Islanders to make sure the state isn’t holding their money.  “Under law, all financial institutions are required to turn over inactive accounts after a certain period.  Many times individuals or family members forget about these dormant accounts, but people are entitled to receive their money back.” said Senator LaValle.                        (continued....)

Senator LaValle Calls Upon Governor To Keep Sagamore Children's Center Open

Sagamore Children’s Psychiatric Center is already a Regional Center of Excellence for children and adolescents with a long, proven history.

New York State has a responsibility to provide quality, compassionate care to our children in need of these critical services. Over the years, the facility has down sized considerably in an effort to control costs.  We cannot stand by and allow Long Island to be the sole region of the state without any children’s psychiatric beds.

Senator LaValle Secures $500,000 for Rocky Point Downtown Revitalization Project

 

New York State Senator Kenneth P. LaValle today announced that after many months work he has secured $500,000 for the Rocky Point Downtown Revitalization Project.

Senator LaValle was joined by Town Councilwoman Jane Bonner at a morning news conference announcing that the funds had been secured.

In addition, Brookhaven Superintendent of Highways Dan Losquadro has committed $720,000 of 2014 Capital Budget monies from both the Traffic Safety and Street Lighting Divisions to the project.

LaValle:New Legislation Requires One-Time Registration for BASIC STAR Exemption

New York State Senator Ken LaValle reminds residents that new legislation requires all homeowners receiving a Basic STAR exemption must register with the New York State Tax Department in order to receive the exemption in 2014 and subsequent years.

“Throughout my tenure in the New York State Senate, real property tax relief has been an important priority and as an architect in the development of the STAR program, I take tremendous personal satisfaction in the benefits this initiative has brought to homeowners in the First Senatorial District,” Senator LaValle said.
