Arma E. Andon

Arma E. Andon embodies the life, character and abilities of a generation of leaders who exemplify the great American spirit. Mr. Andon, also referred to as “Ham”, faced nearly insurmountable odds against him from the moment he enlisted in the military during time of war. His courage and capabilities were tested far beyond most individuals’, and he truly deserves the recognition as a New York State Senate Veterans’ Hall of Fame member.

Mr. Andon was born on January 4, 1919 in New York City. He graduated from Boston University, and although he was accepted and began to attend Fordham Law School, he did not finish; instead, he chose to enlist in the United States Army to represent and fight for our country during World War II.

Walter George Drago

Mr. Drago was raised in Yonkers, New York. He graduated from Lincoln High School in 1964, the Academy of Aeronautics with an Associated Applied Science degree in 1967 and Embry Riddle Aeronautical University (ERAU) for Professional Pilot training in 1968.

In 1968, Mr. Drago enlisted in the U.S. Army Warrant Officer Flight Program. He graduated with honors as a WO 1 Army Aviator and was selected to fl  the Grumman OV-1 Mohawk. In March 1970, he was deployed to Viet Nam, and within a year, he flew over 220 combat missions in support of the U.S. and the Allied Forces in Viet Nam and other areas in the Southeast Asian region.

While in Viet Nam, Mr. Drago was promoted to CWO 2 and awarded the following decorations:

Meredith Festa

Meredith Festa, an enthusiastic pet owner, found her true vocation through her love of dogs. Perpetually showing where there is a will, there is a way, she set out to protect our canine friends and has made a difference both in the United States and internationally. 

An avid dog lover, Ms. Festa could not ignore the number of abused or stray dogs with nowhere to call home. Little by little, she began doing animal rescue. What started off as a small scale effort, took off when she joined Guardians of Rescue. She was the only woman willing to go on rescue calls, in really rough areas, to pull animals out of harm’s way and get them to safety.

Joseph Theinert

1st Lieutenant Joe Theinert was only a sophomore in high school when the September 11, 2001 attacks occurred. At that time, he wrote, “There is nothing glorious about war but I will go to it to keep the people I love away from it. 9/11 NEVER FORGET.”

Determined to serve his country as quickly as possible, Joe opted to accept an ROTC commission at Valley Forge Military Academy and College over the Congressional nomination he also received to attend the United States Military Academy at West Point.

Jordan Christian Haerter

Jordan Christian Haerter was born on July 30th, 1988 in Southampton, New York, to proud parents, JoAnn Lyles and Christian Haerter of Sag Harbor. He was their only child. Jordan grew up in Sag Harbor loving Little League baseball, Cub Scouts and dressing up in hand-made military costumes every Halloween, making sure all the details were extremely accurate . As he grew older, his interests turned to online computer warfare games, playing with friends and world-wide team members and opponents.

Toni DeMeo

At 89 years young, Toni DeMeo, head of hospital volunteers, says retirement isn’t even a thought. In fact, she still makes the wheels turn in several departments at Eastern Long Island Hospital.

Since 1995, Ms. DeMeo has served as the chairwoman of volunteer services at Eastern Long Island Hospital, which relies on 300 volunteers companywide. Ms. DeMeo is essentially the human resource manager for volunteers who work in every department of the hospital. When asked why she still works, she replied, “At the end of your life, every day counts. I like being in charge and I like that I still have an impact around here. Eastern Long Island Hospital is a very different place — there’s a lot of smiling going on, and what you see is what you get.”

Eugene G. Smith

Bronx born Eugene (“Gene”) G. Smith was sent to Vietnam in November 1968 as a member of Charlie Company, 1st Battalion, 7th Cavalry whose mission was to find, fix, and destroy the enemy through fire and maneuver; and to provide combat, combat support and combat service support in coordinated operations as an integral member of a combined arms team.

Gene graduated from Farmingdale College in 1967, worked briefly for Dorne & Margolin Aviation designing antennas for war-bound Bell Helicopters and shortly thereafter, in 1968, he was drafted and sent to Fort Jackson, South Carolina for basic training. Basic was followed by stints at Fort Polk, Louisiana and Fort Benning, Georgia for advanced training. Gene left training with a rank of corporal E-4.

Nicole Behrens

Nicole Behrens overcame the traumatic challenges of an abusive marriage to become a financial advisor and later an advocate for women. It is this last characteristic, being a victim and survivor of brutal and recurring violence in her house, that does not de­ ne Ms. Behrens, but that has propelled her to give back to the community with passion and inspiration in a series of unique ways.
