Senator LaValle's College Affordability Act

The New York State Senate today passed legislation to help middle-class families and students afford the rapidly increasing cost of a college education.  The Senate’s 2012 College Affordability Plan (S7449A), sponsored by Senator Kenneth P. LaValle (R-C-I, Port Jefferson), would help parents save for higher education for their children and give students and families access to low-interest student loans, as well as clear information about the size of the loan debt they are taking on.

Taming Lame Ducks

New York State Senator Kenneth P. LaValle (R,C,I – Port Jefferson) said today the abuse of taxpayers by two outgoing school boards has prompted him to introduce legislation that would require a lame duck  school board to have a supermajority vote in order to approve a contract for a new superintendent when the hiring occurs between the annual May vote and the annual reorganizational meeting of a local school board. Assemblyman Dan Losquadro (R,C  -Shoreham) will sponsor the legislation in the Assembly.

Tax Cap Now!

The Long Island state senate delegation gathered in Bayport Thursday afternoon to pressure their Democrat colleagues in the state Assembly to approve legislation that would cap property tax increases at two percent.During a press conference at the home of Richard and Joanne Curley, the Senators said the property tax cap would help ease the burden on homeowners across Long Island.Senate officials said the Curley's home was selected because it is representative of the tax burden facing homeowners in Nassau and Suffolk counties. According to Joanne Curley, the property taxes on her family's home have risen from slightly more than $6,000 eight years ago to more than $11,000 today.

LaValle Bill: LIPA Must Get Public Service Commission Approval Before Hiking Rates.

New York State Senator Kenneth P. LaValle (R,C,I – Port Jefferson) passed legislation today (S2581) that would make rates fair, just and transparent. Under LaValle’s bill the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) would be required to seek approval by the Public Service Commission (PSC) if LIPA seeks a rate increase by more than two and a half percent per year.   If enacted, the PSC would be required to review and approve LIPA's rate increase requests before they are passed on to Long Island ratepayers.

Senator LaValle Welcomes National Champion Rocky Point Cheerleaders

New York State Senator Kenneth P. LaValle (R-C-I, Port Jefferson) and Assemblyman Dan Losquadro (R,C-Shoreham) welcomed the Rocky Point High School Varsity Cheerleading Team to the state Capitol and presented the team with a proclamation on the steps of the Million Dollar Staircase for their extraordinary achievements.  In February, the team won the National Championship in the Universal Cheerleaders Association’s Medium Varsity Division in Orlando, Florida.
