Senator Ken LaValle Obtains Record State Aid For Our Local Schools

March 31, 2014 –  State Senator Ken LaValle announced that the newly adopted state budget includes a $1.1 billion increase in aid for education.  According to Senator LaValle, this budget will enact the most generous and comprehensive education aid package in recent memory.   Every school district in the First Senatorial District will see an increase in state aid this year.  There was also a major step taken towards the elimination of the Gap Elimination Adjustment (GEA).


Senate Passes LaValle Bill To Compel Regents To Be More Transparent When Imposing Mandates

April 30, 2014 – The NY State Senate today passed Senator Ken LaValle’s legislation to require more openness when the Board of Regents adopt mandates that impose new costs on local School Districts.   The bill (Senate 1564) requires the Board of Regents to disclose financial ramifications and identify sources of funding to meet requirements as they consider program or policy changes.


Senate Passes LaValle Bills To Make College More Affordable

June 12, 2014 -The State Senate today passed five bills, sponsored by Senator Kenneth LaValle to make college more affordable for students and their families, while setting students up for success. These bills provide opportunities to help New York students thrive by increasing awards in the Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) to equal the cost per semester of SUNY and CUNY tuition, alleviating student loan debt, giving access to free community college to eligible students, and providing targeted work-training programs.


Senator LaValle Announces Summer Reading Program for Students

July 2014 – Senator Ken LaValle invites all students up to the 8th grade to join the NY Senate’s 2014 Summer Reading Program.  The Senate program, conducted in conjunction with the NY State Library, is designed to help children continue to build their reading skills during the summer months. 

Senator LaValle said, “This program is intended to reinforce lessons learned during the school year; keep young minds sharp during the time away from school; and challenge children to continue to learn.  It’s my hope that many students take advantage of the program.”


Senator Ken LaValle Releases Report Concerning Sexual Violence On College Campuses

October 7, 2014 – Today, Senator Ken LaValle announced the release of his report concerning sexual violence on college campuses.  Senator LaValle, Chairman of the NY Senate Higher Education Committee, has long been recognized for his awareness and legislative action concerning this pervasive problem.  In May of this year, he assembled a round table of experts to revisit current approaches and existing laws to discover where additional actions were necessary.
