LaValle Calls for PSC Oversight of LIPA

New York State Senator Kenneth P. LaValle, at left, addresses Michael Hervey, Chief Operating Officer, LIPA  about his recently passed bill (S2581) requiring the State’s Public Service Commission to approve any LIPA rate increases over 2.5%. Hervey argued against the bill which now must pass the Assembly and be signed by the Governor. The LIPA Hearing, held April 7 at Farmingdale State College was chaired by Senator George Maziarz, to the right of LaValle. Michael Hervey addresses the committee at right.

LaValle Bills Provide Full Public Service Commission Authority Over LIPA and Authorizes NYPA to Acquire LIPA as a Subsidiary.

New York State Senator Kenneth P. LaValle introduced two bills in the New York State Senate on Tuesday. The first places the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) under the “full oversight” of the Public Service Commission (PSC). LaValle’s  second bill allows the New York Power Authority (NYPA)  to acquire LIPA as a subsidiary.

LaValle: LIPA/PSC Bill Passes Assembly; Long Island Power Authority Must Get Public Service Commission Approval Before Hiking Rates.

New York State Senator Kenneth P. LaValle (R,C,I – Port Jefferson) said his legislation that would make rates fair, just and transparent by requiring the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) to seek approval by the Public Service Commission (PSC) if LIPA seeks a rate increase by more than two and a half percent per year has been passed by the Assembly and is headed to the Governor’s desk for his signature.  If enacted, the PSC would be required to review and approve LIPA's rate increase requests before they are passed on to Long Island ratepayers. The bill was co-sponsored by Assemblyman Robert Sweeney.

LaValle introduced similar legislation in 2008 that passed both houses of the legislature but was vetoed by then Governor David Paterson.

SENATE PASSES LANDMARK “POWER NY” LEGISLATION

New York State Senator Kenneth P. LaValle said the Senate gave final legislative passage to the “Power NY Act” on June 22 to secure the state’s energy future by expanding the availability of affordable, clean and reliable electricity, while also creating jobs and boosting the economy.

LIPA Oversight Bill Unanimously Passes Senate.

New York State Senator Kenneth P. LaValle (R-C, Port Jefferson) and Assemblyman Bob Sweeney (D-Lindenhurst) announced that legislation they crafted in concert with Governor Cuomo has been unanimously passed by the New York State Senate.  The legislation will, once signed by the Governor, create the “Long Island Power Authority Oversight and Accountability Act.” The bill previously unanimously passed the Assembly.

Senator LaValle and Assemblyman Sweeney said that the bill seeks “to provide wide-ranging oversight over the business and rate-making practices of the Long Island Power Authority.  LIPA’s customers will benefit by having the review performed under the direction of the professional staff of the New York State Department of Public Service (DPS).”
