DEMOCRATS VOTE DOWN PROPERTY TAX CAP AMENDMENT

Senator Kenneth P. LaValle today announced that the Senate Democrats unanimously voted down an amendment he sponsored to cap property taxes at the rate of inflation.  Since the rate of inflation has been flat, the measure would have prevented school property tax increases this year.

SENATOR LAVALLE SUPPORTS CAP ON SCHOOL PROPERTY TAXES

While Senator Kenneth P. LaValle today voted in support of a property tax cap, the amendment he offered would have provided greater relief for homeowners.  Senator LaValle proposed capping the growth in property tax levies at 2.5 percent or 120 percent of the consumer price index (CPI), whichever is lower.  The measure that ultimately passed the Senate provides a 4 percent school tax cap or 120 percent of the CPI.

LaValle Legislative Kick-Off: Economy and Jobs Top Agenda; Senate Votes on Jobs Creation and Taxpayer’s Protection Act.

New York State Senator Kenneth P. LaValle (R, C, I – Port Jefferson) said he voted today for the Senate Majority’s Job Creation and Taxpayer Protection Act of 2011. LaValle said the three-part plan encourages the creation of new, private-sector jobs and ensures fiscal responsibility, including the enactment of a two percent state spending cap requiring a two-thirds “super majority” vote to increase taxes.

The people of the First Senatorial District made it abundantly clear during the last election cycle,” LaValle said, “No new taxes and we need jobs, jobs, jobs.”

LaValle Votes to Cap Property Taxes.

Fulfilling a campaign promise, New York State Senator Kenneth P. LaValle  (R,C,I – Port Jefferson)  voted today to cap property taxes to the lesser of 2% or the annual increase in the consumer price index (CPI).  Senate Republicans first passed a property tax cap in 2008, but the measure was never acted upon by the Assembly. LaValle said 43 other states have some type of property tax cap and have seen property tax reductions.

“Everything that has been tried to provide relief to taxpayers, up to this point, has not worked,” LaValle said, adding that he has been pushing for a tax cap for many years. “This bill will provide real relief to homeowners who are paying the highest property taxes in the nation,” LaValle said.

LaValle Invites Budget Stakeholders to Provide Input, Grassroots Effort Examines Budget and Local Impact.

New York State Senator Kenneth P. LaValle (R,I, C – Port Jefferson) today said he is conducting a broad, grassroots examination of New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo’s  proposed executive budget and meeting with local stakeholders to hear firsthand how the budget impacts local groups, organizations and individuals.

“The State has a $10 billion budget gap that demands we realign priorities, eliminate waste and make very difficult decisions about programs and services,” LaValle said. “We have a $130 billion budget and must work within its footprint.”

“I am determined that the budget process be open and transparent,” LaValle said.
