LEGISLATURE PAVES WAY FOR MEMORIAL HIGHWAY

Senator Kenneth P. LaValle and Assemblyman Marc Alessi today announced that legislation they sponsored to create the ‘Lt. Joseph J. Theinert Memorial Way’ in the Town of Shelter Island has passed both houses.  The measure designates a portion of New York State Route 114 in memory of Lt. Joseph J.

THEINERT MEMORIAL WAY ROAD SIGN TO BE UNVEILED

Senator Kenneth P. LaValle today announced that he will be joined by Assemblyman Marc Alessi, Shelter Island Supervisor James Dougherty, and the Theinert family for the unveiling of the “Lt. Joseph J. Theinert Memorial Way” road sign on Thursday, October 14, 2010 at 1:00 p.m. on Shelter Island.  The sign that will be displayed was created by the NYS Department of Transportation and is an actual size mock up of what the road sign will look like when it is installed.

LaValle And Thiele Announce New Legislation Increasing Veteran Property Tax Exemptions

New York State Senator Kenneth P. LaValle and New York State Assemblyman Fred W. Thiele, Jr. (I, D, WF-Sag Harbor) were joined today by Southampton Town Supervisor Anna Throne-Holst to announce the introduction of new State Legislation which would allow municipalities to increase the maximumproperty tax exemptions under the alternative veteran’s exemptions.

A.8186/S.5597 would further amend the Real Property Tax Law by providing exemptions to veterans which more appropriately reflect the recent rise in real property values. Under the proposed legislation the new cap for wartime veterans would increase from $54,000 to $75,000; from $36,000 to $50,000 for combat veterans; and, from $180,000 to $250,000 for disabled veterans.

Senator LaValle Nominates Yaphank’s Eugene Smith to Senate Veteran’s Hall of Fame.

New York State Senator Kenneth P. LaValle has nominated Yaphank Vietnam War veteran Eugene ‘Gene’ Smith  to the New York State Senate Veteran’s Hall of Fame. Smith will be inducted with veterans from throughout New York State at a Capitol ceremony on Tuesday, June 14.

“Eugene Smith is deserving of a place among New York State’s elite veterans for heroic and gallant service to his country during the Vietnam War,” said LaValle.

Smith, LaValle said, was awarded numerous commendations and medals for his service including three Purple Hearts, a Combat Infantry Badge, the Vietnam Service Medal,  Vietnam Combat Medal, Air Medals and a Bronze Star.

Senate Gives Final Legislative Approval To Bills Limiting Military Funeral Protests

New York State Senator Kenneth P. LaValle (R,C,I – Port Jefferson) said the Senate gave final legislative approval on Thursday June 16 to two measures that offer additional buffers and restrictions for protests or demonstrations seeking to disrupt military funerals, burials or memorial services. The bills balance the constitutional right of free speech with the ability of families to respectfully mourn the individuals who gave their lives in service to our country.

LaValle Names Two to NY State Senate’s Veterans Hall of Fame, Shelter Island 1st Lieutenant Joseph James Theinert and Marine Lance Corporal Jordan C. Haerter of Sag Harbor to Receive Award Posthumously May 22.

Two East End war veterans will be posthumously inducted into the New York State Senate’s Veterans Hall of Fame on May 22 in an Albany ceremony it was announced today by New York State Senator Kenneth P. LaValle who nominated the pair -- US Army  1st Lieutenant Joseph J. Theinert  from Shelter Island and Marine Lance Corporal Jordan C. Haerter of Sag Harbor --  for the state honor.

“Joe Theinert and Jordan Haerter are true heroes who gave their lives to protecting the freedoms we treasure. They should be recognized and commended by our State and community,” said Senator LaValle.  “The New York State Veterans’ Hall of Fame is a tribute to these two fine young men that demonstrates our respect and gratitude for their patriotism and sacrifice.”
