Senator LaValle's Priorities for the New Legislative Session.

New York State Senator Kenneth P. LaValle (R, C, IP–Port Jefferson) today said the messages he heard from constituents and initiatives he campaigned on will form the basis of his legislative agenda for the next two years.   

“I fully support the Governor’s property tax cap proposal,” LaValle said. “A two percent cap or cap tied to the rate of inflation is a number one priority.” LaValle has been a staunch proponent of a property tax cap for the past several years and said Senate Republicans first passed a property tax cap in 2008 and continued to advocate for a cap in order to provide relief to Long Islanders who are overburdened by high property taxes.

Senator Ken LaValle Applauds Court’s Decision Scuttling Fishing-License Rule

New York State Senator Kenneth P. LaValle today applauded the New York State Supreme Court decision striking down a law that requires recreational anglers to obtain a fishing license to fish town waters.

The towns of East Hampton, Southampton, Shelter Island, Brookhaven, Southold, Huntington and Oyster Bay challenged the law as encroaching on their individual authority to regulate their waters. The law required any angler older than 16 to get a $10 license. The court’s decision applies only to the towns that filed suit.

“I voted against this measure when it was part of the 2009 budget and am happy it has been struck down,” Senator LaValle said.

Senator LaValle Extends His Apppreciation to the First Senate District

Another Election Day has passed and it was one that surely will go down in history.  One week later, people are still talking about the upsets and the victories.  If there was any doubt that every vote counts, this was the election to change the mind of  skeptics.  Races across the state are too close to call until the final counts are tallied.  Once the counts are in, it is up to the re-elected and newly elected officials to fulfill their election promises and work to ensure that government meets the needs of their constituency.

NEW LAW PROTECTS CONSUMERS FROM DISCRIMINATORY COPAYMENTS

Senator Kenneth P. LaValle today announced that legislation which prevents health insurance plans from creating new “specialty tiers” to dramatically increase the copayments that consumers pay has been signed into law.  The law becomes effective October 31, 2010 and will protect people suffering from chronic or life threatening illnesses from discriminatory copayments.

THEINERT MEMORIAL WAY ROAD SIGN UNVEILED

Senator Kenneth P. LaValle and Assemblyman Marc Alessi joined with Shelter Island Supervisor James Dougherty and the Theinert family to unveil the ‘Lt. Joseph J. Theinert Memorial Way’ road sign.  The sign presented at the event was an actual size mock up of the sign that will be installed on the stretch of NYS Route 114 that runs approximately 1.4 miles in length from the South Ferry Terminal to the Cartwright Road Circle.

Senator Kenneth P. LaValle today announced that he will be joined by Assemblyman Marc Alessi, Shelter Island Supervisor James Dougherty, and the Theinert family for the unveiling of the “Lt. Joseph J. Theinert Memorial Way” road sign on Thursday, October 14, 2010 at 1:00 p.m. on Shelter Island.  The sign that will be displayed was created by the NYS Department of Transportation and is an actual size mock up of what the road sign will look like when it is installed.

SENATOR LAVALLE DISCUSSES HIGHER EDUCATION LOAN PROGRAM (HELP)

As college costs continue to climb, Senator Kenneth P. LaValle would like to make the public aware that HELP (Higher Education Loan Program) may be just around the corner.  The program is a state-sponsored private student loan program that was introduced in the middle of the 2009-10 college year.  It offers low-cost, fixed-rate loans that allow students to gain a better sense of their education finances.

Senator Kenneth P. LaValle received his flu shot at the FREE FLU SHOT CLINIC he sponsored at St. Charles Hospital in Port Jefferson on September 29, 2010.  Senator LaValle noted that 400 free immunizations were administered on a first-come, first-serve basis to adults 18 and over.

Senator Kenneth P. LaValle today announced that he is sponsoring a FREE FLU SHOT CLINIC at St. Charles Hospital in Port Jefferson on Wednesday, September 29, 2010, starting at 12 Noon.  There are 400 immunizations that will be administered on a first-come, first-serve basis to adults 18 and over.

NEW LAW SUPPORTS COMMERCIAL FISHERMEN

Senator Kenneth P. LaValle today announced that legislation he sponsored in the Senate to protect the permits of commercial fishermen with large boats has been signed into law.  The new law exempts certain commercial fishermen from having to comply with a 1997 statute that limited the length of commercial fishing vessels.
