Senator Ken LaValle Calls For Return of $1 Billion to Schools - Demands end to the Gap Elimination Adjustment (GEA)

February 10, 2015 -In Albany today, Senator Ken LaValle called for an end to the Gap Elimination Adjustment (GEA) that has forced local school districts to cut educational programs and reduced services since it was implemented in 2010.  “Eliminating the GEA will restore much needed funds to our schools and assist in providing quality education to all of our children.” said Senator LaValle.  He continued, “The $1 billion in cuts should be fully returned to our schools in this budget year.”

Senator Ken LaValle: Senate Passes Bills to Toughen Penalties on Sex Offenders

January 28, 2015 – Senator Ken LaValle reports that the NY State Senate approved a complete package of legislation that would help keep communities safer from sexual predators.

Senator Ken LaValle said. “Accurate residency information is crucial to help safeguard children, college students, and members of our communities from these sexual predators. These bills are critical to increasing the penalties for violations of residency reporting. We need to continue to strengthen important protections against sexual predators.”

Senator Ken LaValle: “Cautiously Optimistic” of Measures Proposed by Governor

“In today’s State-of-the-State/Budget address, I was cautiously optimistic of some of the fiscal measures being proposed by Governor Cuomo to save taxpayers money.” 

 “While my preferred methods differ in many instances from the Governor’s proposals, we generally agree that we need to make New York more affordable for families. I would like to see the ceiling raised so additional Long Island families would benefit by having their taxes limited.”

Senator Ken LaValle on the passing of Governor Mario Cuomo

 

 “The first Italian-American Governor of New York, Mario Cuomo and I shared a heritage.  As Senator, I maintained a good working relationship with Mario over the 12 years he served as Governor.  We spoke often with many of the calls emanating from our homes.  Mario was bright, erudite and a strong advocate for his beliefs.  A captivating speaker, he forcefully represented his position even when it was politically unpopular.  We worked side-by-side on preserving the Pine Barrens, shuttering the Shoreham Nuclear Plant, and improving education.  A well respected leader and a dedicated public servant; his contributions to New York will be missed.

New Law Implements A Recommendation of the Senate Task Force on Lyme and Tick-Borne Diseases

Senator Ken LaValle: NY making additional efforts to protect consumers from fraudulent and abusive debt collectors

 

December 5, 2014 -Senator Ken LaValle announced that New York State will begin implementing new regulations to protect consumers. During this year alone, more than 20,000 complaints on debt collection providers were made across the state. The complaints ranged from complaints of harassment, aggressive phone calls to collect a debt, attempts to collect an incorrect amount and calls contacting the incorrect person.

Senator LaValle said, “We need to better protect responsible borrowers and stop unscrupulous debt collectors.  The new rules and regulations will provide the necessary tools to help stop illegitimate debt collection practices.”

October 30, 2014 – Today, Senator Ken LaValle renewed his pledge to work for a complete repeal of the job-killing MTA tax.  His call comes a day after media reports quoted the Governor saying he opposes the tax, but would not commit to have it repealed in its entirety.

Senator Ken LaValle Releases Report Concerning Sexual Violence On College Campuses

October 7, 2014 – Today, Senator Ken LaValle announced the release of his report concerning sexual violence on college campuses.  Senator LaValle, Chairman of the NY Senate Higher Education Committee, has long been recognized for his awareness and legislative action concerning this pervasive problem.  In May of this year, he assembled a round table of experts to revisit current approaches and existing laws to discover where additional actions were necessary.

In recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, I am encouraging women to schedule their annual mammogram.

It goes without saying that cancer is a frightening disease.  However, advances in early detection screenings have helped save lives by diagnosing cancers in their earliest, most curable stages.  A mammogram is the best early detection tool we have in the fight against breast cancer.  Annual mammograms not only provide peace of mind—they can, and do, save lives.

Senator LaValle and Assemblyman Palumbo: Southold New Home Buyer Exemption Is Now Law

Southold now joins East Hampton, Southampton, and Shelter Island in assisting first-time primary homebuyers

September 24, 2014 – Senator Ken LaValle and Assemblyman Anthony Palumbo report first-time primary homeowners in Southold will now be exempt from the Community Preservation Fund (CPF) transfer tax under a law they authored.  The bill is designed to assist low and moderate-income residents in the purchase of their first, primary home by eliminating one of the costs associated with closing.
