GET THE FACTS ON THE 2013-14 EXECUTIVE BUDGET PLAN

Governor Andrew Cuomo has just unveiled his new Executive Budget Proposal -- marking the beginning of the State Budget negotiation and adoption process for the 2013-2014 Fiscal Year.

For the past two years, the Senate successfully passed on-time budgets that achieved our key goals of controlling spending, avoiding tax increases and helping to create new private sector jobs. This year, we will look to build upon this progress by passing another on-time, fiscally responsible budget that keeps New York moving forward.

Senator LaValle Continues as Chair of Senate’s Higher Education Committee

New York State Senator Kenneth P. LaValle (R,C,I – Port Jefferson) will again chair the New York State Senate’s Committee on Higher Education, a post Senator LaValle has held for all but two years since 1979. Senator LaValle’s appointment was announced by Senators Dean Skelos and Jeffrey Klein on January 24.  Senator LaValle was also appointed a member of an additional seven standing Senate committees: Aging, Education, Environmental Conservation, Finance, Insurance, Rules and Judiciary.

LaValle Bill Establishes Regional Technology High School

New York State Senator Kenneth P. LaValle introduced legislation (S. 1768) on January 9, 2013 that will create a Suffolk School of Math, Science & Engineering Regional Technology Institute to provide instruction to students in the Eastern Suffolk BOCES and the Western Suffolk BOCES in a technology-based learning process of core academic areas.

 The new regional high school would provide high school instruction for grades nine through 12, dedicated to providing expanded learning opportunities to students residing in the Eastern Suffolk BOCES, the Western Suffolk BOCES, and in the school districts of such adjoining BOCES, Senator LaValle said.

Senator LaValle to Host Annual Environmental Roundtable.

New York State Senator Kenneth P. LaValle (R, C, I - Port Jefferson) will host a two-hour-long Environmental Roundtable to discuss environmental issues impacting the First Senate District on Thursday, February 7, 2013, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Suffolk Community College Culinary Arts and Hospitality Center, 20 East Main St., Riverhead.

This year’s participants will again help Senator LaValle chart a legislative agenda that continues efforts to preserve the character and quality of life in our region.

Senator LaValle Sets 2013 Legislative Agenda

New York State Senator Kenneth P. LaValle announced today that his top legislative priorities for the 2013 New York State Senate Legislative session will include job creation and the economy, taxes, state aid to education, tuition affordability, and the environment. The legislature’s opening session is January 9.

         “Until our economy is running on all cylinders, and the unemployment rate returns to pre-recession levels, jobs and our economy will continue to be my number one priority,” Senator LaValle said.

SENATOR LAVALLE ANNOUNCES LOCAL JOB CREATION PROJECTS TO RECEIVE STATE FUNDING

 New York State Senator Kenneth P. LaValle today announced that job creation projects in the First Senate District will receive critically important state funds through the second round of Regional Economic Development Council awards.

“These projects will strengthen our economy and help create and retain jobs,” Senator LaValle said.

LaValle: Technologies Being Developed at Stony Brook University and Brookhaven National Lab May Hold Solution to Storm Communication Woes.

 Mount Sinai, NY, December 04, 2012 -- New York State Senator Kenneth P. LaValle, Chairman of the New York State Senate Committee on Higher Education will be joined by representatives from the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA), Stony Brook University, Brookhaven National Laboratory, National Grid and PSE&G for a 2-hour roundtable discussion (closed to media) about the obstacles encountered during Hurricane/Super storm Sandy and how technologies being developed by Stony Brook’s Center of Excellence in Wireless and Information Technology and Brookhaven National Laboratory may be of help in the future.

SENATOR LAVALLE VISITS EAST MARION FARM; A DEER FENCE GRANT RECIPIENT

Senator LaValle, with the assistance of Executive Director Joseph M. Gergela III of the Long Island Farm Bureau, secured $937,681.25 for Suffolk County farmers to install much needed deer fencing to protect crops from  deer.  Sixty-nine farmers were supplemented with a maximum of $14,642 each and were able to install a total 178,746 feet of fencing.  Most farmers installed more than the maximum allowed by the program which totaled 266,702 feet of deer fence installed, slightly more than 50 miles.

LaValle Graded "A" by New Yorkers for Better Libraries.

 

New York State Senator Kenneth P. LaValle was graded "A" by New Yorkers for Better Libraries for his support of libraries, sponsorship of library priority legislation, and votes on library legislation the group announced recently.

"Our public libraries are invaluable community resources that deserve to have their mission supported in every way possible," Senator LaValle said.

In August librarians in Senator LaValle’s district came together to thank him for getting additional aide for libraries in the budget this year and for his participation on the State Senate Committee on Libraries.

LaValle Legislation Now Law: Military Service Flags, POW Flags and Blue Star Banners

Military service flags, POW flags and blue star banners (which denote that a son or daughter is serving in the military) will be exempt from New York State sales tax under legislation sponsored by New York State Senator Ken LaValle and signed into law by Governor Andrew Cuomo on Wednesday October 3, 2012. Currently, the flags of the United States of America and the State of New York are exempt from sales and use tax.

Senator LaValle said the law (S1007A, )will take effect on December 1 of this year provided the State Tax Department can put the necessary rules and regulations in place by the effective date.

LaValle: $400,000 Secured for Southampton Road

 

The Town of Southampton’s  Springville Rd., in Hampton Bays will be repaved and reconstructed with $400,000 secured by New York State Senator Kenneth P. LaValle from the New York State Transportation Department, it was announced today.

Senator LaValle and Assemblyman Fred Thiele were approached for help by Southampton Town Highway Department Superintendent Alex Gregor last spring. Senator LaValle requested NYS Department of Transportation Multi-Modal Funds and was told the funding was approved last week.
