"Chanukah is the celebration of miracles, a reminder that all things are possible," Senator Parker said.  "As you celebrate the spirit of Chanukah with friends and family, I wish you health, happiness and good fortune." The holiday celebrates a legendary victory of the Maccabees, a band of Jews, over a Greek army that occupied the Holy Land.  After the battle, the victorious Maccabees found only a one day supply of oil in the temple to light the lamps.  But the oil burned miraculously for eight days, the story says.

In a statement released immediately following President Obama’s announcement of his executive order last night, State Senator Kevin Parker embraced aspects of the new polices while calling for a more comprehensive immigration reform package. “President Obama took an important first step toward fixing America’s long broken immigration system,” said Senator Parker. “The President used his constitutional power to shift America’s focus toward recognizing the important contributions made by millions of hard-working immigrants. Senator Kevin Parker Remembers the Award-Winning Actress and Civil Rights Icon Ruby Dee

(Brooklyn, NY) - “Today, America lost Ruby Dee, an award-winning actress and icon of the Civil Rights Movement,” said Senator Kevin Parker. “Ruby Dee died at the age of 91, after a life spent as a star of stage and screen, and as a civil rights activist with her husband the late Ossie Davis, with whom she shared the duty of Master and Mistress of Ceremonies at the 1963 March on Washington.”

Senate Passes Senator Parker’s Bill to Aid Prisoners Upon their Release

(Brooklyn, NY) – Last week, the State Senate passed Senate Bill S.1353, by Senator Kevin Parker.  The bill requires that prisoners be informed of healthcare, mental healthcare and other services upon their release from state prison. In an attempt to make their reintegration into society as seamless as possible, and to safeguard our community’s public health and welfare, the former prisoners will be alerted to special programs in their communities, such as tuberculosis services, HIV/AIDS services, education, alcohol or substance abuse treatment, and other general mental health services.

STATEMENT FROM SENATOR KEVIN PARKER ON WORLD NO TOBACCO DAY

(Brooklyn, NY) - "I commend the member states of the World Health Organization (WHO) for having created ‘World No Tobacco Day’ in 1987 to not only glean international support on the prevalence of tobacco use and its negative effects, but to also encourage one day of abstinence by smokers and tobacco users.

Sadly, statistics show us the global tobacco epidemic contributes to approximately six million deaths per year, including slightly more than half a million deaths from secondhand smoke. More close to home, approximately 23,600 New Yorkers’ deaths are attributed to tobacco use per year.

Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo appointed Gwen Wright as the Executive Director of the state’s Office for the Prevention of Domestic Violence in September 2013.
