Senator Parker Votes to Pass Historic Gun Control Reform

For Immediate Release: January 15, 2013

(Brooklyn, NY) Senator Kevin Parker declared victory with the passage of sweeping gun reform legislation. "We often pass laws where we legislate an outcome. Last night we made history by passing a law where we hope to avoid outcomes like we saw in Newtown.  Our actions will make New York safer and stronger than ever before, and I am proud to vote yes on this bill."

In 2011, there were 12,664 murders in the United States, of those 8,583 were caused by firearms. In New York alone there were 445 firearm related murders. Many of these victims are innocent children including four year old Lloyd Morgan was tragically shot while in a playground and 16 year old Kemar Brooks who was shot while playing tennis in the park. Even our first responders are not immune from the scourge of gun violence, including NYPD officer Peter Figoski who responded to a burglary in progress and Webster Police Department Lieutenant Mike Chiapperini and Webster volunteer firefighter Tomasz Kaczowka who were ambushed while responding to a fire.
