Senate Passes Zeldin Bill to Name Bridge After Grace Peshkur

Waverly Ave Bridge over Long Island Expressway to be named the Grace Peshkur Memorial Bridge

Albany, NY- Senator Lee M. Zeldin (R, C, I- Shirley), announced today Senate passage of S.4385A, a bill to name the Waverly Ave Bridge over Long Island Expressway after Grace Peshkur.

Grace Peshkur of Holtsville, passed away exactly two years ago on May 17, 2009 at the age of seven. She had suffered from Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB), a connective tissue disease causing blisters in the skin and mucosal membranes. EB sufferers resemble burn victims but their wounds never heal.

Senate Standing Committee on Consumer Protection Committee Passes S.459

Repeals pistol and revolver ballistic identification databank

Albany, NY- Senator Lee M. Zeldin (R, C, I- Shirley), Chairman of the Senate Consumer Protection Committee announced that S.459, passed the committee today and will now move to the Senate floor for full consideration.

S.459, sponsored by Senator Mike Nozzolio, repeals the pistol and revolver ballistic identification databank, otherwise known as the New York Combined Ballistic Identification System (CoBIS). CoBIS has failed to produce a single “hit” on a gun crime since its inception, and is costing New York State taxpayers $4 million per year.

Zeldin to DiNapoli: Expand Audits of MTA

Senator Sends Comptroller Open Letter Requesting Thorough Top- Down Forensic Audit While Highlighting Potential Solutions to MTA Fiscal Woes

In an open letter to Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli, State Senate Lee M. Zeldin (R-C-I, Shirley) today called on the Comptroller to greatly expand the scope of his audits of the MTA.

Senator Zeldin also highlighted a dozen potential cost saving solutions, some which have been discussed in the past by the Comptroller, and some which have not. These include:

-- Eliminate overtime abuse- well over $400 million is spent on overtime annually;

-- MTA should share in enforcement camera fines in MTA bus lanes;

-- Competitive bidding/ privatization of NYC bus system;

-- Public/private partnerships;

Senator Lee Zeldin Restores State Grant Process for The Patchogue Village Sewer Project

Patchogue, NY-  State Senator Lee M. Zeldin (R, C, I- Shirley) announced today that he has succeeded  in reviving the state grant process for the Village of Patchogue sewage pump station.  The Village of Patchogue had been in the process of receiving two $500,000 grants for the sewer project, until the former State Senate Democratic Majority directed the New York State Dormitory Authority to cancel the application 11 days before Senator Zeldin took office.

Zeldin (R, C, I – Shirley) recently attended the annual Remembrance Ceremony at the New York State Police Officers Memorial, located at the Empire State Plaza in Albany.  Senator Zeldin (above left) is pictured here with Tracy Zane (above right) and her young daughter, whose husband, the late NYPD Officer Robert Anthony Zane, Jr. of Sayville, was added to the Memorial wall for his heroic efforts on 9/11.

Senator Zeldin Helps Unveil the Purple Heart “Forever” Postage Stamp

State Senator Lee M. Zeldin (R, C, I- Shirley) recently joined State Senator Bill Larkin (R-C, Cornwall-On-Hudson) for the unveiling of the new Purple Heart “Forever” Postage Stamp.  Senator Zeldin (Above, Left), a Captain in the U.S. Army Reserves congratulated Senator Larkin (Above, Right), a retired Colonel in the U.S. Army, for all of his efforts leading the call for the Purple Heart Postage Stamp, classified as a “Forever” Stamp.  The Stamp goes on sale at your local Post Office today, May 5, 2011.

State Senator Lee M. Zeldin Visits the Bayport-Blue Point Library

State Senator Lee Zeldin recently visited with the Bayport-Blue Point Library Director, Mike Firestone (Above Right). Pictured here is the library's "Origami Crane Tree", created by staff and members of the local community who folded 1,300 origami cranes as part of a disaster relief effort in conjunction with the clothing manufacturer, OshKosh B'Gosh. The company has pledged to donate one piece of clothing to the victims of the earthquakes and tsunami in Japan for every crane folded.

Albany, NY- State Senator Lee M. Zeldin (R, C, I- Shirley) joined with his colleagues of the Senate Republican Majority and the Assembly Republican Minority to call for the Assembly Majority to take action on the Property Tax Cap. Senator Lee M. Zeldin Announces Next Steps in MTA Payroll Tax Repeal

Ronkonkoma, NY- New York State Senator Lee Zeldin (R, C, I- Shirley) updated a crowd of over 100 supporters, business owners, and members of the community on the status of his fight to repeal the MTA Payroll Tax.

The MTA Payroll Tax is a tax which was placed on every business, school, local government, nonprofit and hospital in Suffolk County, costing Suffolk County Taxpayers more than $163,636,074 since its inception 2009.

“Throughout my first 100 days in office, I have been working very hard to deliver on my campaign pledges and principles that sent me to Albany, and I will continue to do so,” said Senator Zeldin.

Join the Fight: Sign up to Dump the MTA Tax

On June 15, 2011, the Senate passed my MTA Payroll Tax repeal legislation (S.5596-A/A.8193-A) with a bi-partisan vote, 40-22.

The job-killing MTA Tax represents one of the worst ideas Albany has ever come up with. I originally promised, if elected, to secure passage in the Senate of a repeal of the MTA Payroll Tax and I did that this legislative session, with a very responsible plan.

Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver would not allow a vote on this bill in the State Assembly, despite bi-partisan sponsorship in his house. He is obviously not looking out for the best interests of Suffolk County taxpayers.
